Renaissance Pirates on the Spanish Main
« on: August 09, 2023, 02:14:53 AM »
Preview of some pirate forces to face off against my Spanish colonials. Still need to finish the bases. I realize that the “Jolly Roger” wouldn’t be used in this manner but it’s fun to use as a banner.

A closeup of the pirate captain - Jambe de Bois. He’s supported by arqubusiers, a ship gun, buccaneers (scout unit) and some volunteers from the ship’s crew.

Very nice indeed.  What ruleset do you plan to use with them? Having seen your Spanish colonists I just with Khurasan's figures were had a UK stockist.

These look amazing!

Which specific sets of Khurasan 15mm figures are these?  I didn’t know they made Sea Dogs era pirates.

Thanks! I'm going to use Irregular Wars. If Khurasan has a supplier in the UK I'm sure they would do quite well!

The ship gun/crew is from QRF's Elizabethan line. I had to get a bit creative with the rest (all Khurasan) - the volunteers/buccaneer scouts are a mixture of renaissance Irish and english from late 16th century sets. Th rest are from the late 16th century range.

Khurasan?  Can you identify the specific range?  I thought I knew there ranges pretty well but I don't recognize - and just tried to find these figures - as part of their current offerings.  Maybe an older range?

At first glance, I actually though they might be Peter Pig.

Whatever they are, nice work.

Ah, so you are just using Renaissance figures as pirates.  I was trying to find a Khurasan pirate range!   :o

No worries with the Jolly Roger, have lots mixed in with my own 15 mm pirates.

Now all you need are some runaway slaves (Indians and Africans) to ally themselves with the English and anyone else that opposed the Spanish!

If you look under Eureka Miniatures’ 28mm Conquistadores, Portuguese, you will find a close approximation of what Cimarrones looked like throughout most of the early Spanish Main:

https://eurekaminusa.com/collections/conquistadores-28mm-portuguese/products/100por13

And I would mix them with these runaway Indian slaves too, in the same horde or raiding party:

https://eurekaminusa.com/collections/conquistadores-28mm-portuguese/products/100por12

Or … you could draw inspiration from the Cimarrones I had painted up a few years ago, mostly from a Foundry “Renegades” range that didn’t get much popularity, and with a small mix of Black Tree Ethiopians too, with a few added helmets and shields from various sources:

https://www.flickr.com/photos/9593487@N07/albums/72157600724909419/

Breakdown:
24 Foundry “Afro-Caribbean Renegades” (SB0-34) with mixed weapons
8 Black Tree Designs Ethiopians with mixed weapons (IA1196)
16 Foundry “Afro-Caribbean Renegades” (SB0-35) with bows
8 Foundry Darkest Africa Tribal Archers

Now, if only someone would come along and do something like that for 15mm …

Dan
PS.  Just found these when I happened to look up “Afro-Caribbean Renegades”:

Dan,

I think this game is in 15 mm - using Khurasan figures.  So, maybe there are the 15 mm figures you want right before your eyes!  :o

Greg

So true!  In the meantime, until someone releases 15mm figures similar to the awesome 28mm ones I cite above, these Khurasan Sudanese 15mm javelinmen and archers might do, if mixed in with other stand-ins.

https://khurasanminiatures.tripod.com/west-sudanese.html

If the tribal swordsmen come with separate shields, they would work also.  Then you could add round Spanish bucklers, adargas or small primitive shields of their own making.  The tip of their swords should be curved slightly to look like machetes.

They would, of course, be fighting AGAINST the Spanish, as allies to Indians, English, you name it.

Dan
