Probably a silly question (and not intended to derail such a splendid thread), but is there any technical difference between a bastle house and a pele tower - other than one being designed by a Brazilian footballer?
No plan survives first contact with the dice.

Height...probably. Although there are shorter towers and taller houses. A tower might not always be primarily for living in but a house seems generally to have been..I think!

I'm no expert but I believe that bastle houses were usually 2-storey (although you did some 3-storey ones). They were basically fortified farm houses / barns. Their ground floors were designed for valuable livestock while people sheltered on the upper floor(s). Peles or peels were fortified towers designed just for people.

The barmkin looked so sad and empty that I just had to sit down for a couple of minutes and throw together the kitchen and stables, besides the Great Laird needed a place for his horse and food for his household. Great.

Coming back to the difference between bastle houses and pele towers, the bastle houses I've seen have all been in pretty remote places while the pele towers have either been in villages - there's one in Ponteland and another in Corbridge - or attached to wealthier houses.

Having pretty well finished the fancy buildings of the Laird's Household I moved on to the homes of his vassals, in the process I made a smaller, less elaborate barmkin for a less wealthy Laird and a few random walls. Then I added a garret to the Great House.    https://antonswargame.blogspot.com/2023/05/homes-for-humble-folk-and-garret-for.html

Thanks to all who took time out to explain the difference.

Having finally completed the Build Phase I thought I might get a "family photo" before I switched to painting mode.

a wealthy Laird's properties

a more likely holding

I spent the evening prepping the two bastle houses for their first coat of paint. This consisted of spreading a thin layer of wallboard compound over the brickwork to simulate mortar and generally soften the look of things

It works rather well to my mind
