The first coat goes on! A layer of standard household indoor latex, matte finish of course, to protect and strengthen the foam. Once this is dry then an overall coat of matte gray from a rattle-can followed by the ultimate in tedium; painting each stone a slightly different shade of gray. I will alternate between that task and working on the interiors to keep from completely losing my mind.

The weather was nice so I got the whole complex sprayed gray today. Next comes picking out individual stones in different shades of gray. More stuff here  https://antonswargame.blogspot.com/2023/06/oh-no-im-going-gray.html

Too much variation? It seems that way to me

Agreed. Most of the stone would come ultimately from the same source, and so variations in colour would be more subtle.

The variation looks good to me if you dry brush it.  A dry brush of the same colour across all of it will bring it all back together and give a more subtle variation between the stones.

Not happy with my first attempt I decided to try a different approach, this produced a more subtle result but is painfully labor-intensive.
Lots more pictures and a step-by-step can be found here https://antonswargame.blogspot.com/2023/06/perhaps-im-trying-too-hard.html#more

I think the variation looks good. With dry brushing and washes the differences will become less stark, and the tones will blend. I usually like to have one colour that stands out a bit.

Looking really good, can't wait to see it when it's finished.

I think the variation in the second batch looks really good, and should be perfect when a wash has been applied. Are you aiming for a specific part of the border? I know nothing much about the Scottish side, but I've always thought that on the English side the stone takes on a redder hue once you go into Cumbria.

Amazing builds. You really capture the essence of these structures.

Having recovered somewhat from painting all those stones I got started on the interiors. Things are going well and according to plan (for once!) More Here : https://antonswargame.blogspot.com/2023/06/bastle-house-project-beginnings-of.html#more

Back from vacation and ready to go! I built and installed the interior in the Large Bastle House as well as the cookhouse and stables. Next up is a spiral stairwell and some weathering.  https://antonswargame.blogspot.com/2023/08/back-to-bastle-house-project-interiors.html
