Uniform Question - Russo Turkish War 1828-29
« on: May 29, 2023, 08:50:28 AM »
Question for  those with better info than me -

Were the white covered peaked caps worn during this campaign issued to all troops or only the guard?

See pics below by different artists. Detail from Siege of Akhaltsikhe and Siege of Kars by Suchodolski showing white caps and from Siege of Varna by Sauerweid showing green peakless caps

There was one subtlety with white caps in the Russian army. These are not white caps. These are cap covers. In hot climates, soldiers wore covers without caps.
Caps were supposed to be worn out of order. The caps had a piping (edging of regimental colors and squad number)
Kutuzov himself often wore a cap at official meetings. referring to the wound. He had a head wound and partial loss of vision. The cap put less pressure on the head. But he was a very smart man.

Does anyone have any spares or want to buy a box with all the cap heads removed??.

I suppose the follow up question is' leaving aside cap covers, did anyone else wear peaked caps other than the guards or was it a campaign modification?' The British army often issued peaked caps in hot climates.

The infantry was supposed to wear a shako (it was a slightly different shape than in 1812) when out of order a cap (sewn in the regiment, and not at the factory for the needs of the army). Later, instead of a shako, a leather helmet was introduced, a project of Nicholas 1.
The officers wore a shako, but outside the ranks they replaced the shako with a cap with a visor, a uniform for a frock coat.

Here is the information from the encyclopedia
In the armed forces of the Russian Empire, the soldiers' cap belonged to a special category of items of clothing allowance for the troops - uniform things. The cap was released in the form of materials and always for a certain period. Made in regimental workshops.

The cap was introduced in 1811 to replace the forage caps of 1797, which looked like a cap bent in half, and was first made from outdated uniforms [1]. The cut of the cap has changed several times. In 1862, the cap was abolished for everyone except cuirassiers.

In 1872, caps were returned to the guards, cavalry, Cossacks and all officers. In 1881, the cap was returned to the entire army, in the guards and cavalry with a cockade on the band, and in the army - on the crown, among non-combatants - with a visor and cockade on the crown.

In Russia in the 19th century, on uniform caps on bands there was a cockade and / or the emblem of the type of weapon (badge), engineering specialty, and so on. An additional sign could be placed on the crown. In summer, a white cover was put on the cap.

In 1906, a khaki summer cap was introduced, with a visor and external chinstrap for all. In 1910, a marching cloth cap was introduced instead, and the outer belt in the infantry was canceled.

A white cover for a cap and a black leather visor were allowed during the named period only to military units serving in the Caucasus.
Officers, on their own initiative, sometimes made a white cover that also covered the visor.

Ah... that explains the differences in the pictures. Thanks!

The white caps are in the Caucasus paintings (of Akhaltsikhe and Kars), and the peakless green caps in the European (Varna).

Perfect!

So I plan on using napoleonic infantry in caps and greatcoats for the period. Would I also get away with infantry in caps without greatcoats, for example Perry 1812 Russians ?

The most notable difference would be the single row of buttons on the chest of the uniforms at this time, rather than the two as was previously the case. Greatcoat
  respectively, no change.

Thanks for clarifying once again.

With the straps and rolled greatcoat covering most buttons on the Perry figs so they will work for me.
