Starting the BEF, Wehrmacht and vehicles
« on: June 09, 2023, 12:52:48 PM »
A BEF section for CoC. AB Figures 20mm.
I had started with 25mm Crusader Figures but then played a CoC game using 20mm figures and it looked more ‘realistic’ to me, so I sold the 25’s and reinvested in 20mm.

 Looking good  :-*

I love Crusader miniatures- I have a wad of their early stuff both painted and unpainted, plus their. Late war British which is this autumn’s project.

However, despite me moaning about it at every opportunity, they don’t do the BEF..  :-[

The Early War British Crusader do don’t have the characteristic chest respirator. Sadly..

If they ever do ‘do’ BEF, I’m in….

Looking good.

Stepping down from 28mm will definitely help CoC look more realistic. I think the ground scale is around 1/100 or so.

20mm definitely hits the sweet spot for me for the Second World War and for CoC. Also goes without saying that AB hit the sweet spot when it comes to figures in that scale, they look great.

Nice looking unit.  1940 is an interesting period to game.
I ended up doing it in 20mm and 28mm because I couldn’t make up my mind.

I usually use Vallejo stone grey for British webbing, but I have to admit, I really like the green you used better. What color is it?

I used VMC colours:
Helmet - Brown Violet/Iraqi Sand 80/20%. Brown Violet/Iraqi Sand 60/40%. Camo strips - US Field Drab.
Uniform - Burnt Umber. Burnt Umber/Flat Earth 75/25%. Burnt Umber/Flat Earth 50/50%. Final highlight Flat Earth.
Gascape - Olive Grey. Olive Grey/Green/Grey 50/50%
Webbing, gasmask bag, gaiters - Olive Grey. Olive Grey/Yellow Green 65/35%. Add more Yellow Green to highlight.
Canteen - Flat Brown, Highlight Flat Brown/Beige Brown 50/50%.

I would suggest that you use the percentages as a rough guide and adjust to suit your own ideas on the colour.

I used the Battlefront painting guide as the initial basis for my colours and adjusted them after checking numerous web pictures/sites.

Nice to see these being used ... might I mention that the gasmask cases on the front of the chest were apparently never Blancoed, but stayed light khaki. Something to do with keeping them breathable, since the filter was inside. Vallejo Khaki Grey 70.880 is about right.

Thanks for the compliments and thank you Tony for sculpting them.

Will there be more BEF and Early Germans coming from the Fimo pack?

I met Battle Honours "plausible man" back in around 1987/88 when Gary Morley asked me to paint some Napoleonics for him. Definitely a scallywag.

Cheers,

Graham W

If somebody made a kit of a Scout Carrier,or a Light Dragon, I'd happily make a crew for it, but I'm not aware that there is either available.
It's certainly a period in which there's a lot more interest, and we can only hope that IBG or even First to Fight takes it on. FtF have taken on some really rare vehicles, so they must expect to sell them.

Early War Miniatures make 20mm Scout carriers and Light Dragons
https://earlywarminiatures.com/product-category/early-war-1939-1942/early-war-1939-to-late-1942-british-armies-1939-late-1942/early-war-1939-to-late-1942-british-armies-1939-late-1942-half-tracks-carriers/

They have crews but variety is always useful.

As I play Chain of Command, NCO's are important so a 4 figure pack of British NCO's with Lee-Enfields and similar pack of German NCO's with MP40's would fill a hole.

And one of the finished Wehrmacht sections.
As CoC requires a 3 figure LMG team, I made up a ammo carrier for one of the walking figures.

All very nice.  I agree that 20mm is the most realistic looking scale for CofC.  Good call on that score.
