The town of Grackle.
« on: June 25, 2023, 03:55:37 AM »
I've been building an Old West town for a while.  I (eventually) plan to play Dracula's America, Dead Mans Hand, and Gunfighters Ball.

I have slowly been painting figures and buildings, but it's starting to come together.

I started a thread for my Dracula's America stuff a while back (in the gothic horror section), but I thought showing off the town in this section made more sense.

Obviously a ton of work to do yet, but it's getting there.  This is just loosely set up here, just to get a feel of it.

Those gray buildings mess up your MDF sepia tone town!  :D

Seriously, a nice start - and that from someone who is no fan of MDF.  Expecting lots of work to rectify those MDF tabs hopefully?!  I count 17 buildings, a windmill, a scaffold (?), and 3 wagons/coaches so far.  Like how the town sign works with one side hanging down.  Plenty of hitching posts - don't forget some watering troughs.  Oh, and a water tank, with a standpipe to keep it filled, though the windmill is a bit far from the tank; maybe consider having them closer together.

Are you going to do a 'technicolor' town or a more muted palette?

I can hear it now, "The crackle of gunfire was heard from within Grackle..."  lol

[Hit that mat with some dull cote - I'm guessing vinyl?]

When I set them up I thought I should just leave them as is, color wise.   I want a more muted looking place.  Dusty, dangerous, but also not desolate.  We'll see how it goes when I get to the challenge of painting all these.

I've never tried MDF buildings before, but got a few in the Gunfighters Ball Greenhorn edition.  I found them rather fun to build.  If MDF works well for any genre, the Old West is probably the best one.

The Grackle cackle!! ha, I like that!

The gaming mat is actually the whole tabletop.  I repurposed an old folding table that was 6x4 foot.  I laid down a bunch of cheap vinyl tiles I got from the DIY store.  I think it works well for what it is, but yes, the shine is awful.  I will give some dull cote a go.  It would look so much better matte.

Thank you for taking the time to look and your suggestions.  I appreciate it very much!

As I play different types of games, I can easily lay a battlemat on top to cover up the desert look.  I thought the desert look of the tiles will work best for a bigger variety of game types.  Post Apoc, gaslands, sci-fi, etc.

Thank you for taking the time to look and your suggestions.  I appreciate it very much!

Looking good! Are you planning to paint them or leave the au naturale?

I think a wash (maybe with wood stain mixed with rubbing alcohol - help dry faster, avoid warping) or brushed on pastels with a good matte seal coat (but experiment on scarp first!!!) will be enough 'color' for the town.  After a bit more careful study, it is the tabs in the roofs that need working on to get rid of the unsightly side of MDF - those tabs.
