Tour of duty. A Vietnam campaign
« on: July 02, 2023, 10:57:59 AM »
We are starting a Vietnam campaign using Force on force rules.

This is the report of our first outing.

Lieutenant L. Smith and his 2nd platoon has been tasked with setting up a blocking position in a nearby village to support a larger battalion assault. To accomplish this he sends out 1st and second squads, with support of a MG squad from the weapons section and a forward observer for the weapons platoons mortar section.

A recon view of the battlefield.

The bulk of the force enter via the road leading up to the village.

While a squad slogs it through the rice fields and dense vegetation.

First squad on the road quickly comes into contact with masses of NVA troops.

The NVA opens fire and start to take up defensive positions. The opening salvo takes out one of the M60 teams.

And to make it even worse for the Marines a heavy machinegun concealed in one of the huts upens fire as well.

The two Marine squads are very much locked in place with little hope of getting to their objective or their wounded. As the NVA have some very commanding positions.

But under the heavy fire. The Marine forward observer is able to call in some precise mortar strikes on the house. Wounding several and momentarily silencing the heavy MG.

Seizing on the lull in fire coming from the NVA positions first squad advances up the road.

Only to find that the heavy MG gunner was only stunned by the mortar hit and that the gun is still in the game.

On the left flank 2nd squad is making is way up the rice fields and jungle but are also halted by heavy NVA fire.

The NVA consentrate most of their firepower to take out the forward observer to halt the mortar bombardment. But the combined firepower from first squad begins to take it toll on the NVA.

Meanwhile 2nd squad has moved up through the jungle and start to engage the forward NVA positions at almost point blank range.

Causing a lot of casualties.

But the Heavy MG and the rifle section in the house is still taking a heavy toll on the advancing Marines.

As the firefight goes on the NVA begin to evacuate their wounded.

And the under strength squads start to melt away into the treeline.

More and more of the NVA starts to disappear into the trees.

The Marines can feel the amount of firepower coming their way lessen scientifically and they press their attack now they have fire superiority they manage to take out the last defenders in the hut.

As they roll into the village they start to take a lot of wounded NVA fighters prisoner.

The Marines have succeded in capturing the village and setting up a blocking position in order to support the larger advance. And claim it as a major victory. They suffered 7 KIA, 10 serious wounds and 5 light wounds.
They took 11 NVA POWs and had 3 confirmed NVA kills.

You might want to run those numbers again before you report them to general Westmoreland. As far as I remmenes there where lost more VC KIA.

Cheers

Nope only 3 dead NVA, lots of wounded though but most of those were captured.

Your terrain and minis look great.  And the lighting makes it look like a cloudy day.

But I don't think Bn. HQ is gonna like the kill ratio... :o

Superb looking game and a really hard fought fight.

Did the NVA pull back because it's part of a campaign and they wanted to conserve their forces. Looking at the casualty figures, it seems like a wise move.

Thanks everyone. Hopefully there will be more after the summer holidays.

But in the meantime. Can someone help me with naming the platoon? The American unit designations are a bit weird to me. How would a platoon be named? Do you name platoon, company, battalion/division?

Yes the NVA mission was a delaying action. They were to withdraw half their forces from the field by turn four. And cause as much trouble while doing so.
But I got too greedy I had such great positions and got caught up in gunning down marines. So I failed in getting enough off the board in time.
