But in the meantime. Can someone help me with naming the platoon? The American unit designations are a bit weird to me. How would a platoon be named? Do you name platoon, company, battalion/division?
Since you have Marines, that's pretty easy. The Army is a little trickier. Here's how the Marines do/did it, from squad up to division level:
Squad. Numerical designation. i.e. 1st Squad
Platoon. Numerical designation. i.e. 2nd Platoon
Company. Alphabetical designation. I.e. B "Bravo" Company.
Battaion. Numerical designation. i.e. 1st Battalion/1st Marines.
Regiment. 1st Marine Regiment.
Division. Numerical designation. i.e. 1st Marine Division.
Please note that some battalions were not under the command of their parent Regiment. Some Regiments did not have any Regimental HQ, so their battalions were under other Regimental HQs. The Marines did not use brigades. For example, 1st Bn./4th Marines is in under the command of the 1st Marine Division.
I can cover the US Army if you'd like, but as I mentioned, it's a bit trickier...
