Better results than my "Five Leagues from the Borderlands" query of "Should my bandit's attack?"

ChatGWhateverT replied with something like a bad business consultant!

Should the bandits attack or hide behind cover? Their enemies have crossbows and bows.

The decision to attack or hide behind cover depends on various factors and the specific circumstances of the situation. Here are some considerations for the bandits:

1. Assessment of enemy strength: Evaluate the number of enemies, their proficiency with crossbows and bows, and any other relevant factors. If the bandits are outnumbered or the enemies are highly skilled, hiding behind cover may be a more viable option.

2. Bandits' capabilities: Assess the bandits' own strengths and weaknesses. If they have superior numbers, better weapons, or other advantages, they might consider launching an attack. However, if they are at a disadvantage, hiding behind cover can provide protection and allow for strategic planning.

3. Terrain and available cover: Evaluate the surroundings and identify potential cover options. If there are natural or man-made structures that can offer protection, it might be wise to use them strategically. Hiding behind cover can minimize exposure to enemy projectiles and provide a tactical advantage.

4. Escape routes: Consider the bandits' chances of escape if they decide to engage in combat. If they have easy access to escape routes or are confident in their ability to retreat, attacking might be a viable option. However, if escape routes are limited or the risk of casualties is high, it might be wiser to prioritize self-preservation and use cover to minimize harm.

5. Long-term goals: Consider the bandits' objectives and whether engaging in combat aligns with those goals. If the bandits' aim is to steal a specific item or cause chaos, attacking might be necessary. However, if their objective is to avoid confrontation or maintain a low profile, hiding behind cover can help achieve those goals.

Ultimately, the decision should be based on a careful assessment of the situation, weighing the risks and potential benefits of both options. It may also be beneficial for the bandits to gather as much information as possible about the enemy's capabilities and intentions before making a decision.

Well, what should they assess to come up with their decision?

To come up with a decision, the bandits should assess the following factors:

1. Enemy strength and numbers: Evaluate the size of the enemy force and their level of skill and weaponry. This will help determine if the bandits are outnumbered or outmatched in terms of firepower.

2. Terrain and available cover: Analyze the surrounding environment to identify potential hiding spots, obstacles, or structures that can offer protection. Consider if the terrain provides advantages or disadvantages for either attacking or hiding.

3. Bandits' capabilities: Evaluate the bandits' own strengths, numbers, and weaponry. Assess their combat skills, knowledge of the area, and any specific advantages they may have over the enemy. This will help determine if the bandits are well-equipped to engage in combat.

4. Objectives and priorities: Determine the bandits' goals and priorities. Are they primarily interested in self-preservation, acquiring specific loot, eliminating the enemy, or causing a distraction? Understanding their objectives will guide the decision-making process.

5. Escape routes and fallback options: Assess potential escape routes and fallback positions in case the situation becomes unfavorable. Evaluate the feasibility of retreating and regrouping if needed.

6. Risk versus reward: Consider the potential risks and rewards of both attacking and hiding. Assess the likelihood of success in each scenario, the potential casualties, and the impact on the bandits' long-term goals.

7. Information gathering: Gather as much intelligence about the enemy as possible. This includes understanding their tactics, strategies, and any vulnerabilities that can be exploited.

By carefully assessing these factors, the bandits can make a more informed decision about whether to attack or hide behind cover. It's important to remember that there is no one-size-fits-all answer, and the specific circumstances of the situation will ultimately dictate the best course of action.

The bandits outnumber their enemies, but their enemies have better ranged weapons

If the bandits outnumber their enemies but the enemies have better ranged weapons, the bandits should consider the following factors in their decision-making process:

1. Strategic advantage of numbers: Even though the enemies have better ranged weapons, the bandits' numerical advantage can still be leveraged strategically. A larger force can provide opportunities for flanking maneuvers, overwhelming the enemy, or applying pressure from multiple directions.

2. Use of cover and tactics: The bandits should utilize available cover to minimize the impact of the enemies' ranged weapons. They can strategically position themselves behind obstacles, structures, or natural terrain features to reduce their vulnerability. By employing effective tactics such as suppressing fire or coordinated movements, they can neutralize the enemies' ranged advantage.

3. Close the distance: If the enemies' better ranged weapons are their primary advantage, the bandits can attempt to close the distance and engage in close-quarter combat where their numerical superiority can have a greater impact. This requires careful planning and coordination to minimize casualties during the approach.

4. Divide and conquer: If the bandits can create divisions or distractions within the enemy ranks, it can disrupt their ability to effectively use their ranged weapons. This can be achieved through feigned attacks, diversions, or strategic positioning that forces the enemies to split their attention and resources.

5. Exploit vulnerabilities: While the enemies may have better ranged weapons, they may also have other vulnerabilities that the bandits can exploit. This could include weaknesses in their defensive formations, lack of close combat training, or limited mobility. By identifying and targeting these vulnerabilities, the bandits can offset the enemies' advantage.

6. Retreat as a last resort: If the bandits find themselves unable to overcome the enemies' ranged advantage despite their numerical superiority, it may be wise to retreat and reassess the situation. Preserving their forces and regrouping for a different approach can provide a better chance of success in the long run.

It's important for the bandits to carefully assess the situation, make use of their numerical advantage, and employ effective strategies and tactics that minimize their exposure to the enemies' ranged weapons while maximizing their own strengths. Adaptability, coordination, and exploiting weaknesses in the enemy's strategy will be key to their success.

One of them got shot while you were blathering.

I apologize for any delay in responding. In a situation where one of the bandits has been shot, it's important to prioritize their safety and well-being. Here's what the bandits should consider doing:

1. Seek immediate medical attention: If the injured bandit is still conscious and able to move, they should be taken to a safe location where their injuries can be assessed and treated. Apply basic first aid measures to stop bleeding and stabilize their condition if possible.

2. Assess the severity of the injury: Determine the extent of the injury and whether it's life-threatening or requires urgent medical intervention. If the injury is severe, it may be necessary to prioritize evacuation and seek professional medical help as soon as possible.

3. Evacuate the injured bandit: If the situation allows, the bandits should consider safely moving the injured member away from the immediate danger zone. This may involve carrying or supporting the injured bandit to a secure location where they can receive proper medical attention.

4. Provide cover and support: While attending to the injured bandit, the remaining bandits should provide cover and support to ensure their safety and protect against further attacks. Maintain situational awareness and be prepared to defend against any potential threats.

5. Reevaluate the situation and adjust plans: With one bandit injured, the bandits should reassess their initial plan in light of the changed circumstances. Consider the impact of the injury on their ability to engage or retreat, and adjust their strategy accordingly. The safety and well-being of the bandits should be the top priority.

Remember, in any situation involving injuries, it's advisable to seek professional medical help as soon as possible. This response is a general guideline, and the specific actions taken should be based on the severity of the injury and the available resources and support.

Well, it seems that the warband attacking the bandits is down to one crossbow, but is still picking off the bandits.

If the warband attacking the bandits is down to only one crossbow but is still picking off the bandits, the bandits should consider the following actions:

1. Take cover and minimize exposure: The bandits should prioritize taking cover to reduce the risk of being picked off by the remaining crossbow. Seek shelter behind solid structures, natural obstacles, or any available cover that can provide protection from the enemy's ranged attacks.

2. Spread out and move unpredictably: Avoid clustering together, as it makes the bandits an easier target. Instead, disperse and move in unpredictable patterns to make it more challenging for the crossbow shooter to accurately aim and hit their targets.

3. Close the distance quickly: If the bandits have the means to engage in close-quarters combat, they should attempt to close the distance swiftly. By getting in close, they can minimize the effectiveness of the crossbow and increase their chances of overpowering the remaining enemy.

4. Flank and outmaneuver: Coordinate with the bandits to flank the remaining crossbow shooter. Use the available terrain to their advantage, employing stealth and surprise to get behind or beside the enemy. This tactic can disorient the shooter and put them at a disadvantage.

5. Neutralize the crossbow shooter: The bandits should prioritize neutralizing the remaining crossbow shooter. Identify their location and devise a plan to either eliminate them or incapacitate them to render the crossbow ineffective. Stealth, distraction, or overwhelming force can be used to achieve this goal.

6. Maintain situational awareness: Constantly assess the situation and be aware of any potential threats or changes. Maintain communication among the bandits to share information and coordinate actions effectively.

7. Adapt the strategy as needed: Evaluate the effectiveness of the current approach and be prepared to adapt the strategy as the situation unfolds. If the crossbow shooter proves to be too challenging to engage directly, the bandits may need to reassess their options, retreat, or find alternative means to gain the upper hand.

Remember, the bandits should prioritize the safety and well-being of their members while working together to neutralize the remaining crossbow shooter. Each decision and action should be carefully considered in light of the circumstances and available resources.

The bandits are trying to close the distance, but now the warband elf paladin advanced and is wounding them.

If the bandits are attempting to close the distance but now face an advancing elf paladin from the warband who is wounding them, the bandits should consider the following actions:

1. Assess the threat: Evaluate the capabilities and fighting style of the elf paladin. Take note of their strengths, weaknesses, and any patterns in their attacks. Understanding their abilities can help the bandits devise an effective strategy.

2. Coordinate and regroup: If the bandits have become scattered or disorganized during their attempts to close the distance, it is important to regroup quickly. Reestablish communication and coordinate their actions to effectively deal with the advancing paladin.

3. Exploit vulnerabilities: Identify any weaknesses or vulnerabilities in the elf paladin's defenses or fighting style. Look for opportunities to exploit these weaknesses and create openings for counterattacks. This could include targeting specific areas of their armor, exploiting gaps in their defenses, or using distractions to create advantageous situations.

4. Use teamwork and tactics: Work together as a cohesive unit to engage the paladin. Coordinate attacks, focus fire, and support each other strategically. Employ tactics such as flanking, diversionary maneuvers, or feigned retreats to confuse and disrupt the paladin's movements and defensive abilities.

5. Defend and counterattack: Prioritize defense when necessary to minimize damage from the paladin's attacks. Block, parry, or dodge incoming strikes to the best of their ability. Look for openings in the paladin's attacks to launch effective counterattacks, using the element of surprise and exploiting any mistakes or openings.

6. Utilize the environment: Make use of the surrounding environment to gain an advantage. Seek cover, use obstacles, or manipulate the terrain to disrupt the paladin's movements and limit their line of sight. The bandits can take advantage of their knowledge of the area to set up traps or ambushes, forcing the paladin into unfavorable positions.

7. Retreat strategically: If the bandits find themselves overwhelmed or unable to overcome the paladin's prowess, a tactical retreat may be necessary. Regroup, reassess the situation, and consider alternative strategies or reinforcements before re-engaging.

Remember, facing a skilled opponent like an elf paladin requires adaptability, teamwork, and strategic thinking. The bandits should make the most of their resources, exploit weaknesses, and employ effective tactics to level the playing field and increase their chances of success.

Well, teamwork doesn't seem to work, as the bandits are meeting the enemy in the middle of the field and taking losses.

If the bandits are encountering losses and teamwork is proving ineffective as they meet the enemy in the middle of the field, they should reassess their strategy and consider alternative approaches. Here are some suggestions:

1. Withdraw and regroup: If the bandits are taking heavy losses and the current strategy is not working, it may be wise to disengage from the enemy and retreat to a more defensible position. Regrouping will allow them to assess the situation, tend to the wounded, and devise a new plan.

2. Utilize guerrilla tactics: Instead of engaging the enemy head-on in an open field, the bandits can adopt guerrilla tactics. This involves ambushing, hit-and-run attacks, and using the terrain to their advantage. Strike at the enemy when they least expect it, and then disappear into the surrounding environment to minimize casualties.

3. Exploit asymmetrical advantages: Identify any specific advantages the bandits possess that can be used against the enemy. This could include knowledge of the local area, understanding the enemy's weaknesses, or utilizing unconventional weapons or tactics. Finding creative ways to leverage these advantages can turn the tide of the battle.

4. Seek reinforcements or allies: If the bandits are struggling to overcome the enemy on their own, they should consider seeking reinforcements or forging alliances with other groups who share a common interest or opposition to the enemy. Increased numbers and combined forces can help tip the balance in their favor.

5. Focus on disrupting supply lines: Instead of engaging in direct combat, the bandits can focus their efforts on disrupting the enemy's supply lines, communication channels, or reinforcements. Sabotaging their logistics and support systems can weaken their effectiveness and create opportunities for the bandits to gain an advantage.

6. Explore negotiations or diversionary tactics: If the bandits are unable to overpower the enemy through force alone, they may consider other means to achieve their objectives. This could involve initiating negotiations, creating diversions to draw the enemy's attention away, or exploiting internal conflicts within the enemy camp.

7. Assess long-term objectives: Consider the bandits' long-term goals and whether the current battle aligns with those objectives. If the risks outweigh the benefits, it may be prudent to prioritize self-preservation and strategic retreat to fight another day.

It's important for the bandits to adapt their approach based on the changing circumstances, think creatively, and exploit any available opportunities. The key is to be flexible, resilient, and open to adjusting their strategies to turn the tide in their favor.

Well, time to run away!

If the bandits have determined that running away is the best course of action given the circumstances, here are some considerations for their retreat:

1. Plan an escape route: Identify the safest and most efficient route for the bandits to retreat. Consider the terrain, potential obstacles, and any available cover that can help shield them from the pursuing enemy.

2. Create a diversion: If possible, the bandits can create a diversion to draw the attention of the enemy away from their escape route. This can buy them valuable time and increase their chances of a successful retreat.

3. Prioritize the wounded: Ensure that any injured bandits receive immediate attention and support during the retreat. Provide assistance or carry them if necessary to ensure their safety and well-being.

4. Maintain communication and organization: Establish clear communication among the bandits during the retreat to ensure coordination and unity. Maintain a sense of organization to avoid confusion and maximize efficiency.

5. Use the terrain to their advantage: Take advantage of the surrounding environment to slow down or deter the pursuing enemy. This can include using natural obstacles, setting traps, or taking advantage of hidden paths or shortcuts that the enemy may be less familiar with.

6. Consider alternative transportation: If available, explore options for alternative transportation that can aid in a quick and efficient retreat. This could include horses, vehicles, or boats, depending on the environment and resources at hand.

7. Reassess and regroup: Once the bandits have successfully escaped the immediate danger, they should take the opportunity to regroup and reassess their situation. Evaluate the losses, strategize for future engagements, and determine the best course of action moving forward.

Remember, a strategic retreat can provide an opportunity for the bandits to live to fight another day. Prioritizing their safety and well-being is crucial, and a well-executed retreat can help them reorganize, plan, and potentially gain an advantage in future encounters.

It’s certainly verbose - I wonder if you can tell it to give the single best option, rather than a selection!

I tried that, but it can't be pinned down that easily. Most (if not all) answers will be rather vague and general.

I tried it for the first time last week, asking it to create the best 1000pt list for 2nd ed 40K Blood Angels to take on all-comers. What I got was pretty much a short version of the whole army list.

A second attempt was made asking the same for a 1000pt list Tyranids for Rogue Trader (yeah, I know; the system was not made for tournament(like) play, but endulge me). And here too, the result was impressively vague.

Then I changed tack and asked something as specific as possible. I asked for a Bushido 100 Rice list of Temple of Ro Kan to take on the Cult of Yurei with some specific characters in it (my mate's list, to be specific). This should be more specific, right? I even asked it if it knew the game beforehand, and it confirmed it did.

But the result was again something along the lines of 'this unit is good for doing this, and that unit is good for doing that. It all depends on the list of the opponent (which I had just given a summary of ::) ). Avoid this power of that enemy unit, and try to move this unit as fast as possible.'

All of the above are very general and obvious, and nothing of the answer was useful for improving my own list. Especially when I had to look up certain units which sounded familiar, but were completely absent from the game, and from older editions of the game as well. It had actually made up several characters!

So yeah; it may be a useful tool to write an essay by now, or a colour piece to go with an RPG campaign, but asking it for a killer tournament list, or even a good general list, or even a game legal list for that matter, is still out of its capabilities.

I have no doubt the day will come soon. Might be months or years, but I suspect that it will eventually be able to produce the perfect, competative list for your game of choice, taking the latest rules and even the local meta into account.

But this is not that day...  :D
Miniatures you say? Well I too, like to live dangerously...

I'm slowly discovering what it can and what it can not, mostly outside wargaming, for my regular job.
The quality of the result depends on the quality of the prompt. A bad prompt is vague and will result in a vague and broad answer. Another type of bad prompt is the prompt stuffed with information: ChatGPT will obediently rephrase your prompt to an answer that is nothing more than your input.
The textbot is good in text with a lot of examples online: marketing plans, job applications, wikipedia knowledge, outlines of student reports. In niche subjects like wargaming it will probably fail: not when you ask how to paint a Wehrmacht soldier with acrylics, but surely when you ask for a Two Fat Lardies Bavarian Army List for Sharp Practice.
Decision making as AI opponent is difficult if you don't feed it a decision tree. It's not able yet to read and understand large PDF's (like rulebooks).
But this is only the beginning. In the future AI apps will probably be wargame opponent, painting tutor, photoshop editor and video voice over.

Based on my limited usage, I am finding that what you ask and how you ask it, does have a bearing on the outcome. The old 'Garbage In, Garbage Out' adage springs to mind.

That said ChatGPT does have its uses. In my thread on the Pulp board https://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=142074.0, I used it to provide some 'flesh to some bones' I had generated from a set of mission tables. Results were mixed, but it certainly helped when my imagination has a brain fart.

I've spent a lot of time this last week playing with ChatGPT, and I find if you bully it then it will finally get off the fence and make a decision. I got a lot of "As an AI Bot I don't have an opinion, but you could look at a, b and c to decide".

Tell it to stop dithering, pick one and explain why, and it does a pretty good job of it :D

From my POV, at that point, AI fails the Turing Test. Still better than a search engine, but it, like a human, should ask you to clarify the information you want. Software receives parameters, humans find out the problem. I take care of my semi-immobile parents, and they speak in "garbage", such as "Go get that email from the tenants and ask them about XYZ" and I then have to then *ask the right questions* or, in this case, draw on context and previous experience, to properly perform the task, such as which email account, and which tenants, and how many follow-up questions I can ask before they get mad. :P IMO, That's the "intelligence" that's missing from AI, or at least ChatGWhateverT. Of course, "intelligence" is ill-defined, and has resulted in many different expectations for the behavior.

>  I used it to provide some 'flesh to some bones' I had generated from a set of mission tables

Anyway, back to what it actually can do, and I'm also finding it useful to generate fluff. Much better than searching for a table on the internets. For "Five Leagues from the Borderlands" you can take a Town Action to perform hard work to make some coins. The rules themselves have no flavor text. While I don't use the table, thanks to ChatGWhateverT, I have some fluff!

Hard Work: Complaints an adventurer would say when faced with hard work:
1. "I didn't know 'heroic deeds' included unclogging toilets. I hope the kingdom appreciates this."
2. "I've fought dragons and survived deadly traps, and now I'm reduced to battling a mountain of dirty dishes!"
3. "I didn't sign up to be an adventurer to find myself in the never-ending quest of folding laundry. It's like fighting an army of wrinkle monsters!"
4. "I've traveled through realms and conquered ancient tombs, but untangling this mess of ropes is beyond my expertise."
5. "Saving the world is one thing, but removing stains from these clothes requires otherworldly powers!"
6. "I can slay demons with my eyes closed, but peeling potatoes? That's a skill I never mastered."
7. "I thought my days of cleaning were behind me when I left the village, but here I am, scrubbing floors like a novice bard seeking a gold piece."
8. "I guess they don't teach 'How to wield a sword while mopping' in adventurer training. It's a missed opportunity, really."
9. "I've braved haunted forests and crossed treacherous mountains, but assembling this furniture might be my greatest challenge yet."
10. "Who needs magical artifacts when you have the power to move piles of dirt from one spot to another? Truly, my powers know no bounds."

Inside the hidden European laboratory, the main characters' forces face a large group of armed Nazi treasure hunters. The laboratory environment becomes a battleground, as they fight to uncover the truth behind the treacherous plot.

Plot Twist: The Betrayal Unmasked

As the main characters approach the heart of the treasure's location, they discover a shocking betrayal from within their ranks. A trusted ally reveals their allegiance to the Nazi treasure hunters, jeopardizing the mission.

Act 4: The Final Stand

Climax: Showdown in the Lost Temple

The main characters' forces reach the hidden temple containing the priceless treasure, confronting the Nazi mastermind behind the fiendish plot. In a climactic battle, they must overcome not only the villain's formidable powers but also the challenges brought on by betrayal and a hazardous environment. Victory will determine the fate of the treasure and the world's future.

Still requires human input to successfully transfer it to the tabletop for a game, but at least a lot of the imaginative hardwork has been done.
