Yarkshire Gamers World Cup of Historical Wargames Rules
« on: July 26, 2023, 02:04:36 PM »

Over the next few weeks Yarkshire Gamer will be running a World Cup of Historical Miniatures Wargames Rules, everyone can get involved,

8 rules have been seeded to go straight into round 2

The voting will take place on the Yarkshire Gamer Facebook Page, I realise that it does exclude those on FB but the Preliminary Round had 2,700 votes so I need it to be manageable and one voting location does that.

Only one version of each rule set is eligible so, WRG Ancients is in as a single entry, not 1st Ed, 2nd Ed etc.

The Seeds are

1. In the Grand Manner
2. WRG Ancients
3. Fire and Fury
4. Chain of Command
5. Bruce Quarrie Napoleonics
6. Black Powder
7. Charles Grants Wargame
8.Rapid Fire

We could argue forever about what rules should be seeded and as its the first time I've done it, I picked the rules that I've seen have most influence from my perspective. I've only played 5 of them, I actively dislike 2 and only really played one, I even play alternatives with the same time period which are less popular, but you've got to start somewhere.

Preliminary Round has been completed on the 25th July with the following results

Well everyone the Preliminary Round of the Yarkshire Gamer World Cup of Historical Wargames Rules is over and we have the 16 sets of rules that will compete in Round 1 of the competition.

The 16 are

1. Battlegroup

2. Sharpe Practice

3. General de Armee

4. O Group

5. To the Strongest

6. Hail Caesar

7. Mortem et Gloriam

8. General de Brigade

9. Bolt Action

10. Lion Rampant

11. Crossfire

12. For King and Parliament

13. Saga

14. L'art de la Guerre

15. Men who would be Kings

16. By Fire and Sword

The draw for the 1st Round will be held during the recording for the Brews in the Binyard Summer Special and the ties announced to the public on Monday 31st July with the ties being played that week. The draw will place the top 8 as the home teams and 9 to 16 as the away sides.

For those who are interested the just missed out rules are (if there are 2 numbers the same the votes were tied.

17. Bill hooks
18. Blitzkrieg Commander
18 Blucher
20 AK47

It is Tom, TO the Strongest is running away with the first game vs Saga but this one is really close, the lead has changed hands multiple times already.

Welcome to Game 4 of the World Cup of Historical Wargames Rules.

Today's match up sees General de Armee, Dave Brown's second set in the first round take on our second set from the Osprey Blue Books Series, Men Who Would be Kings, again two very different sets of rules.

General de Armee is a set of Big Battle Napoleonic rules. A more recent set than GdeB it saw the introduction of the ADC method of Command and Control sitting above the main rules. More streamlined but with a nod to old school these rules are just about to get a second incarnation.

Men Who Would be Kings is set in the Colonial Era and is a seeks to recreate the battles of the Indian Mutiny, Africa and beyond. The rules have a Hollywood style and troops are very much at the mercy of the quality of their officers and leaders. Perfect if you fancy getting a big Sean Connery tasche and going all Peachy.

Game 1 ends today with To the Strongest still well ahead of Saga. Game 2 is a right ding dong, the lead has changed hands so many times but Lion Rampant is ahead of General de Brigade at the moment. Game 3 saw Bolt Action ahead early doors but MeG has got a shifty on and is well out in front at the moment.

Thanks for joining in.

Game 5 sees Battegroup take on By Fire and Sword, do you prefer riding into battle on a tank or as a Winged Hussar !
Battlegroup got the highest votes in the Preliminary Round, can Fire & Sword pull a flanker !
