What are the available options for 28mm medieval castles?
« on: July 31, 2023, 03:55:54 PM »
I’ve done some google searches, but also looking for suggestions.

Bonus points if the castle would fit for Spain during the Reconquista.
Thanks.

Back in 2016 this is what I had to say on the subject:

Compared to something like the Tabletop Workshop castle, taken up by Warlord Games, the Renedra castle is better value being cheaper and giving much more bang for your buck in terms of conversion potential.  Dwavern Forge and Tabletop World look really nice but are way too expensive.  The MDF ones just don't do it for me - looking too wooden - and are also no cheaper.  The old GW castle goes for silly money on ebay and still doesn't look that great.  The Hudson and Allen one is undersized and not readily available in the UK.  Not a lot of other alternatives other than complete scratch build.

I would suggest to scratch built one. I know I would if I had the space to put it afterwards. You will be able to get something much much better than the ready made solutions out there. Only the best resin printed castles can be on par, and those would end up costing 100 times more.

I have the Renedra castle and it is really quite nice, lots of extra bits and gubbins to customize it with as well.

Things not mentioned here yet, you have the Fogou ringfort, though it is more of a dark age build. Could work as an old castle still in use.

Renedra’s looks really cool.

Sarissa does a motte-and-bailey style, but that may be too early.

If you don’t mind scrolling, Etsy vendors often have some good 28mm castles for sale.

I am a fan of the Renedra castle.
But if you don't mind a fantasy look, this keep just came onto the market last month.
More of a large keep than castle.

The Renedra 'Castle' appears to be a bit fantasy oriented as it is.

The soon to be sold(?) Magister Militum produce a range of resin castle bits. Ziterdes produced a castle in hard foam and their are various printing services that have the licence to the King and Country range of medieval buildings

Probably worth adding that if you want the cheapest option, then the MiniArt 1/72 castle is probably your best bet. Yes, I know 1/72 is too small but with some clever basing and/or some work to the doors/gates you can get a decent looking item for a reasonable price. You also get a reasonable footprint that won't require half the table.

I will add the caveat that the MiniArt buildings are not terribly well engineered. They don't go in for positive connection points so you do have to faff about lining up the bits and ensuring they are square. I binned one of their houses some years back out of sheer frustration. That said i have one of their forts and it's somewhat easier to construct.

There was a fantastic cast resin (modular) Italian fortress from manorhouse designs, but I think it is long out of production.

This project will provide an option as well. Once it is complete that is.
