Sources for 15mm SHEEP?
« on: August 01, 2023, 02:53:52 PM »
As the title says, I’m looking for sheep to use in ancient, medieval and even fantasy settings.

Any suggestions?  Thanks

Dan

Can you say sheep without goat?  :D https://www.forgedinbattle.com/index.php?route=product/product&product_id=736

Railway sheep in H0 should also be fine.

Another ones is Ancient and Modern Army Supplies (has the Donnington ranges). They have a good selection of camp, livestock, baggage etc items.
My armies:
- Henry VIII's army (WIP) 15mm
- Ancient Germans (28mm)
- Ancient Belgae (Gauls with German allies) (28mm)
- Massilian Greeks (Greeks and Gallic mercenaries/subjects) (28mm)
- A few EI Romans (28mm)
- Handful of WW2 British (15mm)
- A load of old 1993-1999ish Warhammer Orcs and Goblins

“Donnington ranges”?  I don’t think I’ve seen those.

Dan,

You're two best sources for 15 mm sheep - from a man with a painted flock of 96+ - will be Museum Miniatures and Pendraken (in the Animal Range, 15 mm) supplemented with Donnington (in the New Age Camp and Baggage) and Irregular.  If you dip into all four you will get some modest variety in poses - with the laying down rams in the Donnington range most significant.  I am sure there are other ranges with 15 mm sheep.  Domestic livestock is fairly well catered for.  Wild animals are a little more problematic with Irregular being an invaluable source - they are also good for domestic livestock but not much pose variety for any of the animals (the pronghorn have a male and a female though - but you have to ask for them).

You might also look into the old Musket Miniatures range for some HO (so a bit large for 15 mm) animals, too.  Not so sure about domestic animals but that is where I got my beavers before it changed hands (and squirrels, foxes, skunks, and more).

That Donnington range has some fun stuff in it.  And check out the Casualties in the "Originals", too.

edit: oh, duh!  Forgot about Peter Pig.   And Forged in Battle - they have a good variety of domestic animals.  editing the edit: QRF have sheep, too (in Freikorps listings)

No one has asked so I will, what are the sheep for?  Or just decoration?  A long, long time ago Wargames Illustrated had a side-game for herding sheep, you needed a shepherd and a dog or two plus some fencing for that.

“What are the sheep for?”

LOL.  The sheep are for the outskirts of a “medieval” village defended only by peasants*:

https://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=138326.0

The sheep I’m buying might be used as an objective for their enemy to pillage/loot.

Museum Miniatures, Donnington, Peter Pig, Forged in Battle and QRF/Freikorps.  Those are excellent suggestions.  Looks like I’ll be ordering a few more sheep in the coming days!

Thanks so much!

Dan
* After I picked out all the “duplicates” (extras) of the peasant fighters, in order to pick one of each pose to keep, I’m left with two near identical piles.  Actually, most of the figures in that “duplicates” pile are unique poses also.  About 40 figures that I’ll never use.  If anyone is interested, give me a shout.

I have an eBay seller saved somewhere that’s just started doing sheep and cows in 1/72 and 1/100 (Once the meds have kicked in and I’m more compost mental I’ll link to them here just in case) hopefully this link will work https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/125759687638?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0&ssspo=kuIoCUsoTvC&sssrc=4429486&ssuid=q0W62upWR3y&var=&widget_ver=artemis&media=MORE

Fifteens there is a game called Herding28 which uses that idea/principal (although the chronically blanchitsu obsessed have made creepier versions!) and is free/worth a look if you want a non-combat game or to lure little ones into the hobby.
