Flatpack - Bush wars 60/70/80
« on: August 02, 2023, 11:54:15 AM »
For a period of time, I have been toying with the idea of wargaming bush wars, in Rhodesia and South Africa.
I looked into 28mm and 20mm.
I opted for 20mm, convincing myself I could use die cast vehicle’s that were readily available.
I could use HO scale buildings.
I could buy and use 1/72 scale plastic aircraft models.
I was then inspired by Ash’s thread on this site (wow, there is some great work on that).
So, where to begin ?

Here’s my first play at making shantytown shacks.

I bought mdf buildings off the Internet.
Not bad at £5 for 3 off, so I bought a couple of sets.
I wasn’t happy with the roofs, so got hold of some corrugated plastic sheeting.
After posting images of the final shacks on FB, a great comment came back, that tyres and rocks were used to hold down the corrugated sheets, so they were duly added.

First try at a shack.

First shack with walled painted.

After this first shack, I started making the roofs a little more untidy.

Half way there with the group of 6.

Individual shacks coming along.

So, at this stage I thought I was finished, before the comment about adding the rocks and tyres on the roofs.

Plastic tyres incoming.

Finally tries and rocks added to the rooftops.
One finished shanty town, for now.

Brilliant stuff, the tyres really add to the overall look.

Thanks

They came from JB MDF Products on eBay.
They didn’t have them in 20mm, so these are the ones for 28mm.
I think they were 28mm Sloped Shed /Hovel removable roofs and options for windows doors

Love those shacks.  They look really good.  An should be quite versatile...

I’ve also been able to obtain a couple of buildings to use as stores.
These came from “The Square”.

Having seen these 'In the flesh' I can attest that Bob
has done a very good job on these.

Very nice start.
As I was scrolling down the pictures I was thinking I'd chuck a few old tyres on that, and then there they were..!

If you're after any of the weird and wonderful vehicles I'd highly recommend S&S, superb range, and great to deal with as well.

Great looking shacks! I scratch-built mine, as well. Here's an account on how I did mine on my blog:

Cheers Ash.
I don’t think I’ll achieve all you have in your posts on this subject, but nice to hear I’m going in the right direction by adding the tyres.
I’ve got a few of the different vehicles for this period. I’ll show them later.

Some HO scale civilian vehicles for the period.
Idea will be to use them on armed convoy runs etc.
Got these from the Oxford range of vehicles.
Got them a little cheaper by visiting die cast fairs here in the uk.
