Private soldier of the 28th Regiment of Foot in 1835?
« on: August 02, 2023, 02:52:10 PM »
Gents,

A friend of mine wishes to use this image in an upcoming University Press title (as yet unnamed). It’s a picture of a Private soldier of the 28th Regiment of Foot in 1835, in Australia.

I am trying to find out where this picture (which book) it originated in so the correct creditation can be given.

Does none have no clue?

Thanks.

A google lens check didn't throw up any original sites. It was used in a wargames blog post on Australian frontier wars, a couple of ancestry type posts as a reference of what a period soldier wore and a couple of Pinterest pages but no source info.

It's not one of the images from the vinkhujizen collection, at least not from the year pencilled below it. But it looks similar to those illustrations in terms of style and age.

I don't know but....going by the foxing on the image, I guess it is 19th century. I have read several regimental histories written in the 19thC, and it is exactly the style of illustration you find in them.

"Historical Records of the Twenty-Eighth North Gloucestershire Regiment from 1692 to 1882" might be worth checking, but unfortunately it doesn't seem to be available on the internet archive or Gutenberg.

I may well be wrong, but your picture bears all the hallmarks of a watercolour by the British illustrator Richard Simkins. 1850-1926. As such, it may never have been published in a book. I have a copy of Uniforms of the British Army, W.Y. Carmen, published 1985. The book is a reproduction of his plates in private hands. The collection is not fully comprehensive and regrettably the 28th are not included. I'm sure if you search the web and compare with similar authenticated Simkins illustrations, you may at least have a start in tracking down a copy of the print knowing who it's by.

It looks very much like the sort of illustration displayed in a regimental museum.
