Peninsular Campaign. 17/11 two new reports
« on: August 10, 2023, 09:42:32 PM »
So, last night Peter, Graham, Mark and I embarked on our Peninsular War Campaign. So far, the home spun rules are working a treat and we got to our first battle. Blurb and pics here.

http://olicanalad.blogspot.com/2023/08/cuatro-cervezas-por-favor.html

After this battle is done the rules will have had a reasonable run through and any glaring stupidities will have been spotted. The balance of campaign and battle event cards will not have been but, given how these things go, when are they ever really. That said, if the post battle stuff works, I'll release all relevant campaign MS Word files on request.

Excellent stuff!  I've been looking forward to this.  :-*

And those AoR/BB maps are bloody handy for all sorts of campaigns.

And those AoR/BB maps are bloody handy for all sorts of campaigns.

They are, especially if you separate them into terrain types - which is why it’s nice to have both books with 200 or so maps (in total) - otherwise they can be a bit random. I’m only using nine pages (each 17 maps). 4 open, 3 ‘mountain’, 2 closed ‘woody / farmland’.

The Murat campaign maps are also an excellent on line resource as they cover the whole of Europe. They are an excellent size. I had to print mine smaller (75%)
because it wouldn’t fit my map board otherwise.  Note to self - buy a 3 x 4 sheet of soft board.

Yes indeed and that's what I did with our BB campaign.  There are 'mountain dots' on the campaign map, but they aren't actually referred to in the campaign rules (presumably an oversight?), so I restricted those locations to using only the mountainous maps.  They tend to be the higher-numbered maps, so we added 50 to any roll <50.

Oh?  First I've heard of the Murat campaign maps.  Thanks for the tip! :)

Yep, if you want point to point area maps murat.ca is the thing to search. I contacted the owner several years ago to ask if he minded me putting images on my blog. He’s a great guy and didn’t mind a bit. He’s put them out there for people to use. At some point I’m going to do SYW campaign using one of the Central European ones. A three way Austria, Prussia, Russia campaign.

I’ll need something to do for the next year or two. I’m starting a new period in a couple of months. I’m just putting the Perry order together now. Not huge but big enough. About 1300 figures, mostly metal, for the Sudan. Then I have to paint the things. It took me seven years to paint my Peninsular collection (2700 figs) but, these should be easier. 720 are Beja and Ansar spearmen in units of 60, which should be a doddle compared to French leger - partly, that’s why I’m doing the Sudan, truth be known.

Enjoying this on the blog. Your Peninsula War project has been a massive inspiration and motivation for my own First Carlist War project.

I commented on the blog. Great stuff.
I am going to build a wargames army, a big beautiful wargames army, and Mexico is going to pay for it.

The Spanish 2nd Army under O'Donnel move to counter the French Army of Catalonia under MacDonald which crossed the frontier at Vich. It's the first battle of the campaign (early turn 4).

Report and more pics of the action here:

Really enjoying following this campaign. And I have gushed so much about all your collections and your superb painting skills before, I've run out of superlatives.
