AWI in the Canadian Maritimes
« on: August 15, 2023, 11:21:40 AM »
Since moving to Canada, I've been looking at exploring some local history through gaming... Back in the 1770s my area (New Brunswick) was part of Nova Scotia - and for a while it was set to be the 14th colony.
It never happened, but we had a fair few raids by patriot privateers, and a couple of uprisings/rebellions.  The later were characterized by lots of participation from the local indigenous tribes (under the auspicies of the Watertown treaty) and the remaining Acadians, giving quite a different look.

So don't expect big armies, but lots of skirmish potential. First up some armed civilians, rebels, bystanders and privateers.
...
Slight Caveat - I am taking slightly Hollywood approach to history and drawing heavily on FIW figures to give a bit more variety and flavour. Ironically, the use of Napoleonic sailors isn't part of that, there are contemporary pictures of jack tars that look straight out of Nelson's Navy

I had the same issue with attaching photos yesterday.  I've alerted the moderators, and they are looking into it.

That made me (finally) get around to using MyGallery here on the LAF for including photos in my posts.  It works quiet well actually...

By the way, my wife and I are planning a road trip (from Michigan) to the Canadian Maritimes in late Sept./early Oct.  Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and PEI...

Awesome! Some of the leaves are starting to turn already, so I hope you get a good Fall showing!
I work in Saint John (just around the corner from where Benedict Arnold's house was, and in sight of where Fort Frederick and Fort Howe were), and live about 40 minutes up river.
Give me a shout if you want to chat about places to see or for reviews :)

Let's give it a shot!

The start of my Patriot Privateers-  although congress passed a law that 1/3 of all crew in a privateer had to be landsmen, I am focusing on nautical types for now to get a definite aesthetic. There are a few period pictures showing very Napoleonic looking sailors, and I am mixing them in with sailors from earlier in the century

So historically most privateer raids seem to have ended up against the local loyalist militia. I am doing these guys as un-uniformed, to contrast with Loyalist garrison regiments like the Royal Fencible Americans and Kings Orange Rangers

The last picture has a rebelling Acadian (ssh,  hunting shirts might have been  a more southern thing, I am just using FIW figures... ) and a indigenous Wabanaki warrior (who should have a different hair style, as Wolastoqey traditionally had half long/half shaved. But like I said, Hollywood history coming into play). I have a few more indigenous warrirors and Acadians from an earlier project, so they will get pressed into service for the Maugerville and Eddy rebellions)

I like the look of this - an aspect of the AWI about which I know very little to absolutely nothing!

I have quite a few of the figures in the photos (I particularly recognise the Redoubt "giants"!) and normally play British Grenadier for larger games and Sharp Practice 2 for skirmish actions, which sounds like the sort of size that you are aiming for.

I look forward to seeing this develop.....

I too love Stan Rogers! (and Garnet too!) What a tragic loss. His songs include AWI and 1812. Great songs from a phenomenal talent!

Oh wow, Loyalists and Stan Rogers, what's not to like?

A non-Maritimes song, but all the same...

Thanks folks

This post was supposed to be Royal Fencible Americans... buuut uniforms are fiddly and.I have regularly looked at them, then decided to move onto something easier...

More civilians, indigenous and rebellious Acadians.  The girl in britches (top left) I am planning to use as that great trope of adventure literature- a girl pretending to be a boy. No clue what she is going to get up to, but feels like it has great scope for Sharp Practice or Donnybrook type narrative games

You've some good looking figures there!

Thanks.  We just might take you up on that.  Our plan is 2 nights each (in order) in Saint John (where we'll be on our 25th Anniversary!), Halifax, Louisbourg, and Charlottetown...
