Irish War of Independence - painting guides?
« on: September 07, 2023, 10:43:47 PM »
Hi - for my next project I’m thinking of buying and painting some of Footsore Miniatures’ Irish War of Independence minis, starting with their IRA collection. Just wondering if anyone has any advice re a painting scheme?

Given the IRA were in civilian kit, then appropriate muted tones of civilian dress of the day. Greys, browns and for the more rural types a bit of tweed. No bugger will look quite the same as his fellow so you can go to town using whatever palette was available in contemporary civilian dress.

Thanks! Yeah, I had assumed there would be some variety in what they wore… Just wondering in case anyone had done something similar and had suggestions re which Vallejo or AP paints to use.

As mostly civilian dress, you have a lot of flexibitly on colours - I tend to use what I have already, a lot of military colours are a good base for civilian clothes in this era (and earlier). Also mix colours together - you don’t need to worry about having the same colour for the rest of the unit.

As others have said, a non-uniform look of late Edwardians.

I painted these Musketeer (now Footsore) Miniatures some time ago so can't recall specific paints, but mostly Foundry triads
