Fantastic Battles in 10mm The Blue Duke Rises! AAR
« on: September 19, 2023, 03:29:56 PM »
I fought a big battle using the fantastic battles system earlier this summer. Because every unit on the battlefield fits the medieval period I am posting this here. If the mods feel like it is better suited to fantasy please move the thread.

This is our third battle with Fantastic Battles, which I find to be a grand ruleset for both fantastic and historical clashes. The army of the High King is based on late 15th century armies of the Holy Roman Empire while the army of the Blue Duke are based on the armies of the Netherlands, especially Holland and Frisia in the 15th century. You can read the AAR and watch more pictures over here: https://goodbeanswargaming.blogspot.com/2023/09/fantastic-battles-aar-rebellion-of-blue.html

The Battle was highly enjoyable and fought in a grand manner. It is the first time I am using the miniatures for the dukes army which are 3d printed models made by Peculiar Companions. The High Kings army are a mix of printed models made by Polish Lightning, Peculiar Companions, Forest Dragon and MiniRat.

Cool beans!

Great looking armies and table. Really good to see new 10mm figures, I was looking at the photo trying to recognise the ranges. Then read they were 3D printed.

They are 3D prints by peculiar miniatures. From the Spanish and English late medieval sets.

Great looking game.  I recently got Fantastic Battles.  They look like a decent rule set but I've not played them yet.

Really hooked me with this one, lovely looking figures, and a spiffing AAR!
One thing before I jump in feet first, could I use the rules for ancient Greek and dark age Viking armies?

Yes for both. The rule book actually includes a Greek hoplite period list, and I’m pretty sure there is one included for Norse as well. It’s also a sandbox rules set, so if you disagree with the existing take on historical armies then it is quite easy to modify the list.

Oh wow, that's great!

I also have the rules, although likewise haven't yet played them because I'm paralysed between sticking with 15mm or going down to 10mm!  lol

(I have painted Warmaster 10mm in the past and found those reasonably easy to paint, but Pendraken sample figures I have had before just seem so small, which is a shame as they have ranges I'd love to build armies from)

Very inspired to get off the fence and paint some armies now though, great stuff.
