Large 15th Century Cavalry Charge Feldlager 2023
« on: September 21, 2023, 02:33:01 PM »
Hi All,

Feldlager 2023 was last weekend and there are some amazing videos and photos from it to inspire us. There were 36 mounted knights!Lots of Swiss and Burgundian infantry too. The camp looks fantastic as well

Makes me think of the battle of Murten with Burgundians forming up who ever was ready then charging in to try and break up the Swiss

Interesting. An observation, which could be down to modern health and safety standards, but the group don't seem to reach a full gallop and would lose a lot of impact when they hit the enemy. Which is what I was sure the whole point of late 15th Century Heavy Cavalry was that of impact!

So health and safety or perhaps we've been looking at the Heavy Cavalry charge thing all wrong (which I absolutely doubt!).

The video doesnt show it but on other videos it is quite a bit of a hill they were charging up. That is an interesting question about the speed, i had it in my head that cavalry charges were not that fast but cannot remember where i heard it from.

It would be interesting to find out though. Maybe they had to gallop slower to maintain close formation for the impact

I would say definitely but only until the last minute when they would charge home as fast as they could. This type of warfare was all about impact in Western Europe.

I think I read somewhere that some napoleonic charges were basically a trot, but can recall where.
I do believe though that in this case safety was the real reason, and it’s logical. You have individuals with various degrees of expertise on riding in armor at the very least, horses not used to work in a unit, a lot of things could go wrong.

Cool. They do look very like the Perry figures!

A few things I noticed
* the armour is very shiny - probably much more so than I tend to paint it
* plain wooden lances
* the riders are very upright in their posture - undoubtedly due to solid back and breast plates - but feels it must have made riding any distance uncomfortable.
