Anyone use Tube Acrylics for miniatures?
« on: September 24, 2023, 10:53:41 AM »
Sorting through some stuff for Ebay I came across this set.  I bought it years ago and never used any of the paints so I could sell "as new".  Then I thought...

Do any of you use such paints for figures\miniatures rather than terrain?  If you do, are they any good?

I use paints from many figure painting brands and also craft acrylics but not these tubes - apart from Titanium White for ultra bright highlights occasionally.

Like you, my preferred tube paint is titanium white, which I use for drybrushing a basecoat over a black undercoat, mainly. I do use some other colours for terrain and similarly big jobs, but my main hesitation to use them for detail work is that it's less easy to control the amount used, which usually has to be mixed with some water as they are rather thick.
The actual paint opacity varies, it seems, with my favourite cadmium yellow and red having a great opacity, together with the white, with the others which I have tried trailing behind. This might obviously depend on the brand too.

I do most of my painting with Tube Acrylics, normally the cheapest I can get.
Yes quality does vary a LOT, as does how opaque different colours are.
OK for me as if it is not very opaque I use that tube for washes.

Galeria is a good brand.

When I got back into mini painting (10-15 years ago now!!) I tried with some of this style of paints, and was generally rather underwhelmed, modern mini paints are far easier to work with.

Yes, I use them. The thick ones are great as undercoats for plastic figures. The thin ones (liquitex low viscosity) are great as general purpose paints

I used to use Maimeri gouache acrylics mostly, plus the occasional translucent colours for special effects like wood grain, and pan water colours for washes. The results were good, but these days I use pretty much nothing but Vallejo out of pure laziness.

Like many others have said, tube acrylics vary in opacity, which is a quality most miniature painters value the most. Model paints tend to have reliably higher pigmentation. I suppose those who paint on canvas paint differently, working with layers of various thickness.

Give gouache colors a go, if you want opacity and a REALLY good matt quality. Beware, however, that they are not very durable and need a proper spray sealant to stand up to the hardships of the gaming table.
