Khurasan releases 28mm Vietnam range (AD)
« on: September 26, 2023, 03:10:55 PM »
Khurasan Miniatures has released its 28mm Vietnam War range:

The releases are building-block models for US and NVA regulars. If the range is well received we will make more.

The question is, how do they scale to existing ranges (Empress, Gringo and Rubicon*).

For that matter, how do the NVA and US compare for size.

* other ranges are available.

Overall the sculpting is quite nice but there are some off putting oddities and anomalies. Why are the US figures all wearing gas mask carriers? About the only time they saw any real use was at Hue in 1968 and even there it was fairly limited. Very occasionally the bag was, I believe used, for other things but having the gasmask carrier on every figure is rather limiting.*

The posing of half of the M60 gunners makes no sense unless they are intended to be supported by a wall or another figure. There is absolutely no way you can fire an M60 unsupported with  hands on the pistol grip and receiver. It's the correct grip for firing from the bipod. Presumably these are intended to be modelled firing from cover. Again somewhat limiting but then for the average platoon sized force you won't need more than two M60 gunners anyway.

Some of the M16 wielding figures seem to have either 30 round magazines or some unknown version that used L7 Bren mags. The 30 round mag was really quite rare in Vietnam outside of occasional use by SF and more often than not those were private or unit purchase.

The NVA RPD lmgs and SKS are rather too long, probably by about a scale 8" to a foot and one of the RPD gunners suffers the same posing issue as the M60 gunners. The AK-47s appear to be missing the gas tube.

Sorry for what sounds like carping, overall the sculpts are quite attractive and, subject to size compatibility with existing ranges, I'd likely buy a few but it's a pity that they are let down by details.

* Shave off the trouser leg pockets and curiously enough these would be more or less suitable for the 1975 Mayaguez Incident or even Marines involved the evacuation of Saigon (Op Frequent Wind) but that is pretty niche.

Carlos, some odd poses indeed. I must say I prefer the NVA/NC figures to the Americans. I don't game Vietnam in 28mm but would am intrigued as to the answer on compatability with other, larger ranges.

The painting work is fantastic; the figures, not so much.
