SCW newbie
« on: October 02, 2023, 02:15:05 PM »
I am toying with the idea of entering the SCW in 28mm, but I am in doubt as to the system. I am tempted to use Chain of Command, which suits size-wise, but I am wondering if there is a good system for this theatre, which I am unaware of. A World Aflame seems to have received rather mixed reviews, and I am thus not sure if this is the route to follow. Do you have any recommendations?

I use Que! From Irregular Miniatures. A couple of pages, a couple of quid, one dice per player, card driven initiative. Units are 12 strong, so no masses to paint. What’s not to like?

They don’t include rules for aircraft, I included an ‘aces are aircraft’ rule, and let them do a mortar or machine gun attack on one unit. Sorted. Sometimes the cards throw up ‘paralysed’ units, but that’s war.

Recommended.

The Lardy 2013 Christmas Special has several SCW articles covering the CoC Espana version. All the SCW platoon lists for Chain of Command are available at https://toofatlardies.co.uk/category/coc-espana/. The Lardy 2014 Christmas Special has a Madrid 1936 Pint Sized Campaign. Pretty great start. Just need the hours for reading, painting, terrain building . . .

Que? Is a very good ruleset. Especially if you are just starting out the period.
Very simple and straight forwards rules.

I've tried both "A World Aflame"and Chain of Command" in 28mm. Chain of Command is a known entity, but we found some of the units overly powerful. We found A World Aflame rather "unfinished". Too many loose ends and as with most Osprey sets no QRS. I've also tried a German "pulp" set called "Triumph and Tragedy" which has a specific SCW book. They worked OK. I've now sold my 28mm and plan to game the period in 15mm!
