Materials For Building a Starhip in 15mm?
« on: November 06, 2009, 09:14:56 PM »
This would be something that would occupy a 2' x 2' square, and open up to allow play inside as well.

We're struggling over what materials to use to build the base structure. We can't really use licensed toys because we may want to put this in a rule book that we will eventually sell, so we really need to start from scratch, or use kits that are long OOP and unrecognizable.

Any advice, links, help, is much appreciated!

Thanks!

Start out with the cases and interior bits from DVD players, record players, and old VCRs - lots of rounded shapes in there you can very easily make into good starship interiors.
You, sir, are not allowed to attempt a takeover of the solar system until your octopus sobers up.

Ray rivers has a thread here from last year:

http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=6586.0

where he built a very effective modular space base interior mainly out of cardboard boxes with printed card detailing. OK, it is 28mm, but the basic principles are still the same and all you'd need to do would be to reduce the scale to a size compatible with 15mm. I assume from your post that you want to build a ship that opens up to allow play internally. That being the case, you should be able to do something similar with the external areas.

If the interior is the important part, do you really need to build the whole thing? It seems like it could be a lot of extra work for minimal results.

But, what do I know  ;)

I would first think of an approach like a box (not square by any means) with the starship interior in it... with a lid/cover type affair depicting the exterior of the ship.

You could get interior ideas, as to what type of rooms/chambers/etc..., to add to make up the ship from any old sci-fi source... Traveller, Space Opera, Space 1889, etc...

Make it a room per box and it could all be very modular, making different types of ships.
Never underestimate the power of human stupidity.

when I was a lad we had a round plastic laundry bin... so wish I'd nicked the lid off that... would have made a great basis for a saucer with a fully playable interior...

maybe a dustbin lid? can't seem to find round laundry bins now...  :(

Would have been great for a scaled-down Dalek ship  :)

Some helpful stuff, thanks. Super-Gibbon and I are going to create a basic frame buy building a box with foam core. Then we'll build internal areas and add external stuff for texture.
