Base size for Perry WOR miniatures??
« on: October 13, 2023, 07:12:55 AM »
Stupidly, I have just bought a load of Perry Wars of the Roses miniatures despite having lots of unpainted lead and plastic.
As this is a completely new project these miniatures will be based differently to usual.
I am thinking of going for 20mm square bases (in clear acrylic).
A lot of newer 28mm lines struggle to fit on 20mm bases.   From what I have been able to Google it looks like the Perry's will cope with the smaller base.  Is this the case?

My metal figures on 20mm bases seem a little unstable on uneven terrain.  Will plastics cope better being lighter?

Once again, thanks for any assistance.

Yes, Perry are quite small in regards to footprint. They go fine on 20mm. You need a bit of weight in the base, otherwise the plastics topple as well. Plastic is less likely to take damage from those kinds of falls though.

Ethelred, I don't know what set of rules you plan to use but if appropriate have you thought of using sabot bases for units? Obviously not a useful suggestion if playing skirmish games!

I’ve based mine on UK pennies. No bother with fitting them on and no bother with tipping either really

I also use sabot trays (link below) for when doing mass battles.

I base most of my 28mm figures on round metal washers (20 mm diameter),
except those who most often fight in close order, which I base on 20 x 20 mm card bases (or 15 mm x 20 mm  for Napoleonic)
and a few from slightly larger ranges (which I use as “big strong guys“ in half-historical or fantasy skirmishes) on 25 mm diameter bases.

Thanks guys.
I am only going to use these for skirmish gaming - my days of painting whole armies is long gone.
Most of my current miniatures are on metal bases with the usual flock etc.
These will be on clear acrylic.

Hiya Ethelred.

Am I correct in thinking you're located in Aotearoa?

I use 10 cent pieces to base my Perry plastics for skirmish gaming, they work just fine, give the figures some weight and are 20mm wide

Strangely they cost less than 20mm metal washers here in the antipodes...

Good luck with your project.

Good man Ants, I've based the few I've painted on 25mm rounds with Sabot bases from warbases

2 pence pieces are the way I roll for skirmish gaming. They have the added advantage of being heavy enough to allow the miniature to flip towards the flat bases if dropped!

Much easier to fit figures on 20mm square than 20mm round? Same space as 25mm round but the base takes up less area
