Bloody excellent yet again.  I especially like the Nigel Mansell mural.  ;)

It's the spitting image of Nige...... unless of course it's young Bruce Grobelaar. The Liverpool connection makes sense.

What I find interesting about republican iconography is it's wide remit and sweeping form. From what looks a bit like Bernie McKevitt in a fetching beret, through Nige/Bruce to a Zapataesque looking figure with a potato on his head. Of course, like most public art, it's ineffably naff in its execution. Makes you wonder if the troubles might not have been solved with a few arts grants and a few more youth centres.  :D

Nice work on the sign. There's so much detailI keep seeing new things each time like the laundry on the line and the tricolour flying from the window. Really inspiring stuff.
Em dezembro de '81
Botou os ingleses na roda
3 a 0 no Liverpool
Ficou marcado na história
E no Rio não tem outro igual
Só o Flamengo é campeão mundial
E agora seu povo
Pede o mundo de novo

Wonderful - I love it. The details have an authenticity which comes from the experience of someone who was there. Which leads me to ask, what’s with the LUFC graffiti? It appears in a few places. Were Leeds that popular in Belfast back then? If so, why?

Thanks for more great photos.

Thanks Troops

I have a memory of a few convos trying to win over the kids. I always chose footie to try break the ice - very little success of course.

Got into a debate over who the best team was ... my first tour was 1979 and I suppose a few of them were Johnny Giles fans ..... it might have been me that nipped back and scrawled LUFC in a few places. 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Don Revie's boys were incredibly popular everywhere in the 70's - graduating from the second division into arguably the best team in Europe; at the time, they were THE superteam to beat. They also had a pretty lively 'firm' causing a bit of bovver wherever the team played as well!

I would assume that in the late '60s/ early '70s Man U must have been popular cos of the George Best connection. Of course by the mid '70s through to the end of his career he seemed to have played for a different club every week, presumably those closest to a pub or off-licence.

1979? An era in when Ipswich Town were a competitive entity. The past really is a foreign country. lol

Yeah - I guess Leeds gave us (Liverpool) a game in the seventies :) I was on the Kop when Gary Sprake threw the ball into his own net and the PA played Careless Hands at half time. That would have been in the sixties though. Happy days…

There's only one game involving Liverpool that's worth remembering.

1981: Flamengo 3 X 0 Hapless Scouse Gits. A lesson in footballing delivered by the world's best footballers and then Zico & Co got bored . So good there are songs about it.

I'd add the link but the anti-football crowd would whine.

Different type of game today with my mate ‘Cookie’ bringing his Saracen s so the entire British force was mounted.

This severely restricted the movement of the Bad Lads and two ASUs were captured after being enveloped.
