One Page Rules Fantasy & Grimdark Paint-a-thon
« on: October 21, 2023, 03:07:43 PM »
This thread will capture my progress on painting the One Page Rules (OPR) collection for Fantasy and Grimdark. Wish me luck!

Some of you might have followed my thread on painting the entire Order of Battle for Waterloo in 28mm. If you do, you will note that I like to prepare an entire project en masse first - assembly, clean-up, priming, etc. - so that I can quickly produce units afterwards. It will take me a few months to prepare the 2500+ French models for the next phase of that project, so I have been sketching out a Fantasy project to keep me painting in the meantime.

My ambition is to paint a handful of armies from the beautiful OPR range. In preparation, my resin printer has been churning out models with phenomenal speed. I got into printing a few years ago when it was definitely a hobby - an ugly one at that - with more misprints than good ones. These days, it's just a joy. I press some buttons and a couple hours later there are 20-40 new models. All assembled, no mould lines to clean up, nothing to repair - just paintable goodness. It's magic!

I am now in the final stages of preparing these models including priming, basing, pre-shading, and so forth as appropriate. Below you will find the game plan for each force followed by a long list of to-be-painted models. As in the Napoleonics projects, I will mark completed units in green once done and posted. For now, I am still in the preparation stage and will post a few progress shots for that. Real painting should start next month once the Napoleonics are done. The first three armies are from the OPR Fantasy range, the others from their Grimdark 40k equivalent.

Saurian (Age of Fantasy): Full range. These are primed grey, then washed with Nuln Oil (lots of pots...) and drybrushed white. Contrast Paints will do the rest. Paint scheme will be traditional green for Geckos and blue for Saurian. Some red/orange highlights and gold as the main equipment/weapon colour. The bases are simple brown pumice but heavily covered with tufts in a variety of intense greens to represent jungle. I printed some larger flowers, rocks and temple ruins to mix in.

Duchies of Vinci (Age of Fantasy): Full range. Primed black as I plan on a metallic scheme silver armour and brass accents. Red and bone-white for cloth items similar to the scheme suggested by OPR. Bases are prints provided by OPR in a ruined grey city style with a few brown/beige tufts, though I printed them as toppers instead and glued those on plastic bases for stability.

Mummified Undead (Age of Fantasy): Full range. Primed wraithbone and to be painted with Contrast Paints. The parts are a bit too fragile for a drybrush and the brown/bone Contrast Paints have plenty of self-shading anyhow. Paint scheme will be bone with turquoise equipment and a few red accents. Old school GW Khemri style. Bases are simple desert sand with a few tufts and rocks.

Blessed Sisters (Grimdark Future): Full range. Primed wraithbone though I plan to manually re-prime the armour in mid-grey afterwards to prevent bony shadows after black Contrast Paints. Classic black armour and red cloth colour scheme using Contrast Paints with manual highlights. Bases are printed toppers on plastic bases using some imperial church floor stl I found online. These will be painted in a yellow/beige rock style with decorative turquoise in a few places on the base. No tufts.

Dwarf Guild (Grimdark Future): Printing these right now as they get released. White primer and then Contrast Paints. Magmadroth Flame for the armour and black for the suits and equipment. Brown tones for the rest. A few energy effects and accents in bright green. Bases are rocks with pumice to be painted grey. I added smaller rocks which will be painted in the same glowing green to represent minerals in the ground. Snow effect over much of the base. No tufts.

Below is the task list. I generally went for everything available in the list with all equipment options, formed into units.

For completeness, here is the fully assembled and prepared shot of the Saurian army (previously posted in another thread). Everything ready to go for contrast paints. The bases will get brown pumice later because the temple ruins and vegetation add-ons will interfere with painting if I add them now.

These are the prepared bases for the Blessed Sisters. This covers the entire range with a few spares just in case. printed base toppers on normal plastic bases. I used a few layers of stippling followed by Sepia wash (removing some randomly with a tissue) and then painted in the lines and turquoise items. Rims are black to contrast with the stone. The models are all printed and primed, but I will have to paint the armour and underside first before I can glue them onto the bases for the final steps.

We look forward to your progress.  Best of luck.

I am glad to hear the 3D printer did finally "click"

Thanks for the encouraging. Most of this should paint up quickly with  the right prep.

Here we have the Mummified Undead in all their prepared and based glory! The bases are blank as I figure that I can spread on the desert texture after painting.

Here are some paint samples for the Duchies of Vinci, Saurian, and Dwarf Guild. Following the schemes described in the first post to see how it all works out. Paints fairly quickly and I think looks reasonable at unit scale. I am also testing the bases to see how they complement the paint scheme. Comments are welcome.

Probably a good idea to have something to paint to break the months long build cycle!  These will look good in mass. Are you planning on using movement trays with OPR?

Very nice on the Vinci. I still need to print mine.

Are you planning on using movement trays with OPR?

Yes. I printed trays for all units with my FDM printer. You can actually see those in the Mummified Undead picture.

Thank you all for the comments. I will have to do a bit more basing prep - and the Napoleonics - and then we are ready to start this adventure!
