Doomed Persian Army Found In Egyptian Sands
« on: November 11, 2009, 01:24:07 AM »
Another set of links that's pure pulp for everyone's enjoyment!

Via BoingBoing, ]Archaeologists May Have Found Remains of Lost Persian Army[/color].

2,500 years ago, an army of 50,000 men left an oasis in western Egypt and were never heard from again.

... and now meddling archeologists have discovered the mass grave of those Persian soldiers. We all know how that's going to end, right?

Heh, that Predates Abdul Alhazred's expedition by at least eight centuries.  I hope whatever they found there was worth it.  lol

They were all drawn to the Keep; the soldiers who brought death; the father and daughter fighting for life; the people who have always feared it; and the one man who knows its secret....

"Peace" is that brief, glorious moment in history when everybody stands around reloading.

"We learned that the remains had been exposed by tomb robbers and that a beautiful sword which was found among the bones was sold to American tourists," Castiglioni said.

Somewhere in America, a priceless Persian sword is hanging over somebody's TV, and occasionally gets used as part of a Halloween costume.

The island of Gotland where I live is rife with hidden Viking treasure. Farmers can hardly put the plough into the ground without turning over €200.000 worth of bracteates. Naturally this attracts looters even though metal detectors are banned here. Just this fall a sizeable trove was looted; f*ckers were caught just a couple of weeks ago, which is unusual. In my book the magistrate should offer the public an opportunity to spit on such people.

What an interesting piece of history...must read up on it.
 :)

On the looting/site robbing, there was a wee radio broadcast on that subject a couple of days ago here. Basicly people going out at night with metal detectors to historic sites.

I'm of the opinion that as nice as the real things are I would much rather buy a well crafted replica and see the real things in museums/public galleries.

To imagine that playing AD&D I actually do exactly the same...
Great piece of news. What a catastrophy for the Persian Empire - not to speak of the suffering of the human beings in that army. Makes me feel rather weird.

I suspect 'Count' Almásy must be turning in his grave. I suspect it would be particularly galling to him that a couple of Italians discovered the remains of Cambyses' army.

For those wanting their fill of a pulp aspect, pick up a copy of Saul Kelly's The Hunt for Zerzura, plenty of gaming fodder there.

We have a lot of issues here in Sri Lanka too with relic hunters. Makes my blood boil.
