Dungeon Tiles and Terrain: P3 Treasure and Gib Tokens
« on: November 28, 2023, 10:20:38 AM »
Having long been a dungeon fan following hundreds of hours gaming in the 1990s with Diablo 1, then D2. I've had the itch to play some table top dungeon crawls, with the howl of beasts wailing in my mind and doors creeping open as I have moved through day to day tasks. Occasionally the line "fresh meat" wakes me from my daydream in a slight panic. The hunger has grown until I cannot hold it back any longer.. i must.. carve.. a dungeon.

Speaking with some mates recently they pointed me to a new dungeon ruleset and that was all I needed, jumping in on kickstarter (Torch and Shield for those so interested) now I need to make a dungeon to play on before it arrives early next year.

Index

P1 - Dungeon Tiles
P2 - Scatter terrain shrines, crates and rubble
P2 - Books and Bookcases
P3 Test with mini Berties monster
P3 Bridges
P3 Gold Treasure Tokens, Bloods Gib Tokens, and Book Lecturns

Having ambitions of something quite special and looking at the many amazing offerings out on the internet and here in LAF, I decided to just keep it simple 2.5D and go with some modular tiles and forget the walls. It all seemed too tricky! As while adding to the beauty and immersiveness, the walls seem to make pudgy fingers a problem and limit the playability somewhat.

And so with that a trip to the hardware store and art shop resulted in a hoard of 3mm foam and 4mm mdf to get started.

I went 1.5inch as a base unit to accommodate the larger monster bases, and AoS skirmish bases now often provided.

I went with a 3mm or 4mm mdf to help reduce warpage and gave them a light spray primer and sealer to help reduce moisture absorption.

Cutting up 3mm foam sheets (I found paperless corefoam what a win) into 1.5inch squares I have them the rock tumbler treatment and then white glued down onto the grid. Once dried I added extra texture from the rocks, and painted with modpodge to seal the foam.

I mixed the modgepodge with a dark blue to tint the shadows and let me see where i had painted.

Despite having a gritty diablo setting in mind as the painting progressed it became a more fancy marble cathedral like floor with some inspiration from hero quest, the red and blue floors a homage to the diablo colouring.

Starting with a beige, greens and dry brushing, followed by brown wash and black wash and some more dry brushing. I'm rather happy how the stone floors came out, if not quite what i had in mind at the start.

Next is some scatter and some access points...

Great looking set.

I never get past the "I really should build some dungeon tiles" thought, so congratulations on producing something :D

Very nice work and quite the production line you have going on there.

Would be Heros may meet King Leoric, who can truly tell what they will discover as they delve the crypts.

Thanks Everyone!! :)

And so it came to pass that more equipment was needed for the dungeon explorers, and would be hero's.

Access points for lower and upper levels, collapses and rubble, presenting danger to the adventurers from below and above. Settings and general creepiness to set the scene for long abandoned and over run ruins. I tried to get some diablo theme into these items as they would help to build the ambiance of the dungeon.

I picked up some reaper bones shrines and made some pillars and shrines somewhat akin to D1, always love a good shrine for a stat boost, ooh and book cases, always enjoy a free spell book... mm may need to fix that... QC is doing an amazing Mordheim build go and have a look if you have somehow missed it!

I loved the shrines that he is littering through the city and needed to "borrow" such a good idea for candles around the shrine bases.

And you always need a well for a Fool of a Took to throw himself in, and pillars for a Balrog fight.

Drums... drums... the drums are beating..

Made some small columns to block LoS in the larger rooms, using a thicker 30mm foam in the middle and cladding with the thinner 3mm.

It's great having the hobby juices flowing again :)
