Victrix Old Guard question about bearskin.
« on: November 30, 2023, 06:32:32 AM »
I have just bought the Old Guard figures from Victrix.

The head and bearskin, is a separate part for the multi build figure.

Each of the heads a small ‘spike’ at the rear, below the bearskin at what I imagine is the hairline.

What is this?

Is it part of the bearskin, like a tail or tassel in which case what colour should it be

Or

Is it part of the soldiers hair or a hair piece (a bit like a pony tail)

Every head piece has this on. If it is hair, should some be shaved off …. Or is a regulations thing?

I have searched every image that I can find in books and online and can’t fine anything ….. except online photos relating to Victrix show the spike retained and often painted white, but also black and brown (which makes me think it is hair).

The feature is not present on my Warlord Games metal Old Guard.

Any help appreciated - thanks Norm.

I believe this is intended to represent an unusual hair style worn by the old guard I believe it is waxed and powered then tied into a stiff protruding ponytail type thing. I'm certain someone will be able to name it but I cannot recall just now
Update:
Just looked it up it's a called a queue. Seems it was often a wig which makes me think it was probably mostly only worn on parade or other important occasions.

Thank you for such a prompt reply.

I did search on ‘queue’ and in relation to the Old Guard and got this;

“ The Old Guard was allowed it's own distinctive dress code, setting it apart from the ordinary rank and file... They alone retained their 6in powdered 'queue' of the 18th century style, with the hair brushed out in front like pigeon's wings”

They also had a penchant for wearing gold earings!

Boney sometimes wanted his troops in grand tenue (full dress) for battles. I imagine Waterloo might have been one of those since there was a pause of several hours for the ground to dry.
And the glorious general led the advance
With a glorious swish of his sword and his lance
And a glorious clank of his tin-plated pants. - Dr. Seuss
