Russian Napoleonic Colors
« on: December 03, 2023, 04:00:35 AM »
I am about to start putting flags on some Napoleonic era Russian infantry BNs and need to understand the position of the Colours for the Command stands.  I am using standard Flags of War sheets so these units all will represent the first BN in a Regiment.

Does the Colonels Colour go on the right or the Regiment’s Colour go there?  I have seen photos and pictures which seem to show both configurations but I would imagine there was a regulation that mandated the position.

Thanks

When viewed from behind the deployed unit, the "colonel's flag" is to the right, and the "regimental flag" is to the left in the first battalion--the second battalion was usually not fielded (in the 'depot' training replacements), and the third battalion carried two "regimental" colours in the field. Thus a regiment's presence in the field comprised the 1st and 3rd battalions.
