Tolkien dragons!
« on: December 04, 2023, 10:54:33 PM »
Looking for “tolkienesque” sculpts for an Age Of Stars era Morgoth army, but most dragon sculpts nowadays seem to be made for D&D- flashy, brightly coloured, and not really fitting the dark ages fantasy theme I’m going for. Any recommendations?
Anything is much appreciated, thanks in advance ;)

Do you have am image you can share of your vision of a Tolkienesque dragon?  Might help!

brightly coloured

That's up to your own painting style rather than the sculpt, wouldn't you say?  ;)

This one is pretty much Glaurung.

My favorite is someone here on LAF did, using a Schleich plastic dragon without it's wings for Glaurung.
I've seen at least two people using toy dragons.

North Star's Oathmark Dragon is also inpired by Tolkien.

Otherwise maybe some old Ral Partha dragons, the ones that were once sold by Citadel too.
If you don't believe in lead, you're already dead.

The old Essex dragon is still available - none more old-school!

This is the Schleich conversion by James Morris that area23 mentioned (and very impressive it is too!):

GW do (or did?) a pretty good Smaug, which might fit the bill. Obviously winged though...
Miniatures you say? Well I too, like to live dangerously...

You can still get the wingless "Fire Dragon" from Mithril Miniatures, which I think is quite nice.

I find the Mithril dragons somewhat lacking.

This one is 70509 Fighting Dragon from Schleich, that I bought in 2020, but it is not in the current range.
I repainted it.

here's the previous threadomancy

https://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=133849.0

either find one you like and rip the wings off, or litterly search for glaurung 28mm or wingless dragons/serpents/lizards until you get something you like

The old grenadier dragons in style where meant to be very D&D in appearance, as quite a few were licensed for that. anyhoo link above gives some great ideas
