Rotten smiles - A Necropolis28 gathering
« on: December 17, 2023, 10:42:14 PM »
I found some time to paint again and decided to start a Necropolis28 campaign with a friend. 'The Narrator' by Westfalia Miniatures, sculpted by the mad genius Boris Szuster Wołoszyn will be my leader.

Is it the smoothed paintjob? The OSL perfect? Nope, but I really like how it turned out. Usually I don't go for dark, moody stuff, but with skeletons it is the right choice I'd say.

The OSL for the glowing eyes and the candle was difficult and I repainted it a few times. At first I wanted spectral birds (thanks again for the tips). Didn't work out, so my wife had a great idea to add a candle with blue flame. Worked a treat and was easy to make out of styrene rod, greenstuff and gel medium.

So, what do I like:

  • Cold blue bone colour works very well for this chap.
  • Magenta eye glow contrasts nicely with the flame.
  • OSL on the gravestone looks fairly convincing.
  • Stippling technique on the skulls on the base worked exceptionally well.

What do I not like:

  • Transitions could be smoother.
  • The robe was difficult to define and keep dark at the same time.
  • The little birds didn't come out as nicely as I envisioned.

Wow, first time seeing this particular miniature but your painting and converting absolutely sells it for me!  :-*

The OSL looks good without being too over the top and any issues with the birds or the definition of the cape do not translate through the pictures at all. Every painter is his/her own worst critic, and I'm absolutely guilty of that as well. In fact; most of the times I get really encouraging and positive reactions, while I'm barely satisfied with my painting myself.

Your work on this excellent mini is absolutely great though; I hope to see more of it :)

Thank you, much appreciated! Check out Westfalia Miniatures: https://www.westfaliaminiatures.com/ Honestly some of the most imaginative sculpts out there. Demented, innovative, grim, but also lighthearted and sometimes with a comic character to them. Love their stuff and will feature a few more in my gathering for Necropolis28.

I know what you mean. I guess I envisioned the robe differently, maybe more texture, I don't even know. The birds are tiny, so here I hoped to get more detail in, but really hard to accomplish. That said, I do like how it turned out and he shall lead my gathering to victory (I hope).

Stunning model and absolutely outstanding paint.  I keep looking at their models but end up not ordering due to the price point.

Much obliged!

Stunning model and absolutely outstanding paint.  I keep looking at their models but end up not ordering due to the price point.

They are not cheap, but it is a one-man boutique venture, so I understand that they have to charge accordingly.

If you join one of their Kickstarter campaigns you get them at a discount. So far all have been fullfilled and quality was top notch. Another avenue is this Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/westfaiacabinetofcuriosities/posts

Wow great job!
I shopped at Westfalia before and got great service by the way. And their figures have a lot of personality.

So glad to see necropolis28 getting some love on this board; majority of my hobbying has been around this game the past year or so.

Very cool figure and most excellent painting, fits the aesthetic perfectly. Hope to see more!

Thank you! Absolutely. Kawe seems to be a great guy from his interaction with customers and fans.

It is a nice game for people with small kids. Only a few models are needed and not a whole table of terrain. Also a game is finished within an hour or even 30min. I am currently working on four more for my gathering and then some tokens to round it off.

Thank you kindly. I am glad you like it.

Nice work—very spooky!

Thanks! That was indeed the intent: Dark, moody, spooky.

Another undead champion joins my Gathering: Alaric the Fallen Freyr.

The miniature is - you guessed it - another Boris Woloszyn sculpt by Knightmare Miniatures. Unfortunately, you can only get him as a set outside the Kickstarter, but the other undead champions are also cool sculpts, so no great sacrifice.

This time I had this idea to feature a pentacle on the base that emanates a subtle magenta light, as if he is just conjured or imbued with necrotic energy.

The bronze armour was also a challenge, as I did not want to use any metallics, so I went for verdigris with some matte metal in protruding areas.

I am pleased how he came out, but I will consider getting some neon paints for future projects to push the glow a tad more.

C&C as always welcome.

Wonderful painting! Verdigris plus magenta light give a unique result, I love this color scheme. And I keep this idea for the future, thanks :)

I love the lighting effect on this miniature - amazing work. The verdigris has turned out nicely as well.
