Saga terrain set
« on: December 20, 2023, 04:42:55 PM »
So my challenge for the Christmas break is to get set for my games of Saga: Age of Magic.

Between the basic rules and the Book of Battles I need the following, where large is 300x300mm and small is 200x200mm:

   Large hill
   Large steep hill
1 Large wood and 2 Small woods
1 Large and 1 Small area of scrub (uneven ground with light cover)
Small rocky ground (uneven ground and solid cover)
Low Hedges (light cover based on 100mm x 25mm)
   2 Small marshes
   Small area of Ruins
   Small building - 200 x 150mm
   Large building - 300 x 200mm inc. out-buildings

I found some great ideas here on LAF for hedges so tackled them first:

Then taking the same materials went for a small scrub land:

Next up - the marshes, a small wood, and the rocky ground

Nice work. Are the marshes static grass clumps?

Those are a bit of a shortcut, it’s a LIOOBO Artificial Moss Mat.  I was going to add static grass but it looked enough like a peat bog as it was and with all of these I’ve been trying for a balance of looks, ability to stand figures on easily, and able to store safely, so went for simplicity.

Looks great! I much prefer 3-D scenery over the neoprene printed stuff. I know some guys love that stuff, but I think it is barely better than just an irregularly shaped piece of felt....  lol

Thanks Mike, when I decided I needed something better to do than become a couch potato at the weekends, I figured that starting from scratch would give me plenty of different things to do, and for me that included not buying ready made terrain.

It’s been a fun journey already, getting geared up with tools and paints. Re-discovering metal and plastic miniatures, and now getting into the amazing variety of 3D printed resin available.  Investigating the various rules and picking something to focus on.  Buying all the accoutrements.  Even my wife has got involved, making me a dice pouch and a unique battle ground I will post later.

I’m having a ball!

Here’s my battleground, ready with a sea edge and a river edge that can be folded under, the green area is sized for Saga. Then the ground is set for today’s first ever use.

Not strictly terrain but over Christmas I also sorted put a couple of different Viking ships as a backdrop for my whole Saga AoM campaign.  The first is Emhar 9001 Gokstad 9th Century Viking Ship 1:72 Plastic Kit, with a sail made by my lovely wife.  The second is the Asgard Rising 3D print delivered by Phalanx Printing UK, which also comes as parts.

Added another wood, more hedges (including separate corners so that I can turn them into fields) and some rocks, bushes and trees for “scatter” in 5LB games.
