Can anyone recommend a good brothel?
« on: December 28, 2023, 09:28:39 PM »
A lot of the action (fighting, that is) happens in bars and brothels in the Tom Swan books.
I am trying to play a game based around these stories.
I am in need of bar and brothel furniture suitable for the early Italian Rennaisance.  This is not easy - most of what I can find is quite rustic - suitable for poorer bars or taverns from the earlier medieval period, or are more suited for 18th century onwards.  There seems little on 3d printing.  In fact, there are few good Italian style buildings for the period - shop bought or 3D printed.

I need plenty of tables and chars and some beds!!! :o
A good Madama Lucretzia would be useful, too.

Of interest, when did people start putting wine in bottles?  Most tavern terrain has bottles.   I believe bottled wine was only common after the 17th century, but Italy had a good glass industry and in the books our character drinks wine from the bottle.

Mae Preta's at the bottom end of R. Visconde de Mauá in Salvador. A famous/infamous establishment it's almost medieval, being essentially a crumbling ruin perched on the side of the hill. Sits almost above an 18thC  baroque basilica.

I can't give you a personal recommendation but I doubt its services run to running water let alone bottles of wine. Probably possessed of an excellent view if nothing else.

I used to pass by on a regular basis when I lived further up the hill. I'd recommend a degree of caution walking up that street and suggest you stick to daylight hours only.  ;)

Got a few suggestions for Madam Lucretzia.
The noble lady NPC in this link.

This lady might also work.

A few civilians in this line could be useful.
https://www.athenaminiatures.co.uk/browse/cat6776949_4617752.aspx
The assault group, foundry and eureka miniatures might have some as well.
And if memory serves, Madam Lucretzia also has different themes. So you can also bring in some nymph, or Greek and Roman ladies as well.

"Peace" is that brief, glorious moment in history when everybody stands around reloading.

This building might be a decent conversion fodder.

And I 2nd the Carnival terrain. Or some ranges Caribbean lines might have what you are looking for.

And this might work. But it definitely has a fantasy feel to it.

The Italian manufacturer Mirliton has lots of interesting options: https://www.mirliton.it/ Not only just figures but also an extensive quantity of scenery.

Hi, Frontline Wargaming sell a range of 28mm Three Musketeers ( ie early 17th century) furniture, some of which might be suitable. Warbases also produce some nice MdF models. The period you want to game is I think late 15th century so "Renaissance" and Medieval buildings can both be used.

You may also consider that in many cases it was just a normal house, so any large medieval house model would do (and sometimes a rather small one).

I think most drinks were poured from barrels. I also doubt there were bar counters, customers were served at their table.

Thanks for all the replies.
I must get some Carnivale buildings.  I am not very disciplined putting in the time to put MDF buildings together (I have a pile sitting around unmade), but Carnivale seem the best option for some fancier buildings.

Commisary Moody - I like the Dark Mistress model - both alluring and rather sinister looking.  You are absolutely correct about the fancy-dress of Lucrezia's workers, nymphs may be a good option.  The sacles and ales tavern could work, perhaps needsing a little modifying.

Capt Try Tempest - using a search for DnD scenery certainly worked better than using either medieval or Renaissance as search terms.

Patrice - I think you are right about the building itself,I just need soomething that is opulent as Donna Lucretzia's is is very exclusive. It is the internal furnishing that is difficult.

SJWi - that's a great link.  The chairs in their "Eccentric" range would also work.

Leunstoelgeneraalbd - cheers.  Anything from Mirliton might have to wait until I am next in Europe - the postage is excessive to New Zealand.  There is some great stuff there.

There is a bit of the history of wine bottles here https://www.wineandmore.com/stories/history-wine-bottle/ that's an interesting read.

tl;dr 17thC had glass bottles.

If you fancy something (relatively) cheap and cheerful and no doubt available in NZ have a look at the Italeri Country House, which cpuld pass for any age from the 15th C to the present day. It's 1/72 but can be made to work for 28mm. Quite possible to stick two together if you fancy a bigger house.

You could try Freebooter Miniatures for your buildings https://www.fbm-shop.de/City-of-Longfall

For furniture, you might want to try dolls house companies like Petite Properties https://www.petitepropertiesltd.com/1-48th-furniture.html

I’ve got unmade Italeri farmhouse, however thought it was small for use in skirmish games. Will try and find tomorrow and post picture against 28mm scale figure.
