Go for maskol - it is made to peel off
Puncture repair is made to stick, so I guess it won't work

Yes, but it should stick only rubber to rubber by some weird chemical process I immediately forgot after having to learn it at school. Might be worth a try. Admiral?

So it is rust first, then flaking paint on top? The rubber cement wouldn't happen to be the stuff you use to mend bike tires, would it? I've seen a product called Maskol mentioned for that technique, but never really went out to look for it. On the other hand, a puncture repair kit should be around here somewhere :)

No, there is some misunderstanding: there is no rust treatment on the tank, only on the engine itself! All I did with the tank is what I wrote above.

Maskol can be used, but has no long shelf-life. Better use this and its appropriate thinner:

Ah, I thought it was meant to be rust, as the colours mentioned are pretty close to my onw rust combo. But the technique should be the same for rust or another layer of paint under the faded upper coat, so your description was a great help!

You can also do that chipped paint effect with salt... though it gives you smaller flakes, depending on the size of your table salt.  The benefit of that method is most folks have it, and you need to only mist/wet the surface of the model so the salt adheres to it. You also need an airbrush, as a regular brush would dissolve the salt as you paint...

I understood that hairspray is useful to stick the salt on?

Thanks again, folks. I won't show any more pics before contest end, as I'm too busy with other real life things. Hopefully I can paint last details tomorrow and will have the photos - just in time - on Sunday.

I did some trials with the tire repair stuff, and it worked really well. Applied it with a small piece of sponge, and removed it with a rubber (one of those clear ones without any abrasive in it).

Really looking forward to your painted ship, Admiral!

That is a outstanding work!
Now we can make together with the Lusenbrink and several other boats from our club guys a battle on the river Nile.
