(Commercial) New Rules coming from Osprey!

Looking forward to taking a look at these new rules from Osprey:

When Nightmares Come

A solo and cooperative skirmish wargame for investigating and battling the supernatural mysteries of the modern world.

When Nightmares Come is a tabletop miniatures wargame about modern day monster hunting and occult investigations. Players will form a team of paranormal vigilantes; self-taught occult specialists and monster hunters who call themselves the Nightwatch. These self-appointed members of the 'watch look to tackle the supernatural horrors and investigate the strange disturbances that plague their city.

The core of the game, using the Action Dice Pool with its multiple die types, is fast and bloody, with tiered enemies, flexible player classes, quick combat resolution, and straightforward mission objectives.

When Nightmares Come also contains a roleplaying element that allows for non-combat challenges and dramatic encounters. This system uses the same dice types as the core game's Action Dice Pool and emphasizes quick resolutions. This narrative system adds a fresh dimension to the core miniatures experience, particularly in longer campaigns where the promise of different foes and new storylines encourages long-term playability.

Thanks for the info, I’ll be looking forward to this release! I like the approach in Zona Alpha and the other games by Mr. Todorof, so this should be fun. Solo and cooperative also fits my situation at the moment.

I am cautiously optimistic about these, but I'm waiting for more details before I get too excited. I guess I'll find out at the end of March...

The cover does look like what I'm after, so fingers are crossed

Well, well, looks like the word is out and news is spreading.

WNC is similar to my recent Nightwatch Blood and Bone game, but in a modern setting and trimmed to fit the Osprey Blue Book format. It's a tabletop miniature wargame with narrative/storytelling elements. It uses the same dice mechanics as Exploit Zero, Insurgent Earth, and the Nightwatch fantasy games.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

While modern horror is not really my genre, I really like the system and the author, so I will at least be picking up the pdf.

@Dentatus How important is the modern-day setting to the game? I'd love to use the system for some 1930s pulp horror.

I'm asking because I had similar idea with your Insurgent Earth (make it about resistance in occupied central europe in early XX century), but some of the mechanics (like more enemies being "dropped-shipped" during the game) didn't really blend with that.

frd, the optional fictional setting is contemporary. WNC is "modern" in the sense it's not the usual sword and sorcery fantasy setting. There are firearms, electronics, motor vehicles, etc. Nothing that can't be reskinned in 1930s tech.

As far as "drop shipped" in IE, do you mean Nazi-occupied Europe? Or War of the Worlds invasion/occupation?
Thinking out loud: Nazis can deploy from an Opel Blitz. Aliens via air-ship. My .02

Nice to have Patrick join the discussion.  Definitely an invaluable conduit for any rules questions we may have.

The Opel Blitz is a solid idea! I guess I focused too much at the "instant" appearance of the new enemies to think of it. It would still work in the narrative if a patrol came speeding in a vehicle of some sorts and start unloading troops in the middle of the table. The campaign I'm running is a solo pre-ww2 imagi-nation focused more on provincial stuff, but having some kind of truck, carriage or other troop transport would work just fine in that context. I guess I'll be making a troop transport soon :D

Glad to hear it will be easy to reskin the new game to 1930s tech. Then it will definitely getting a copy and incorporating parts of the new game into my ongoing campaign. Is the roleplaying element more of a set campaign (like Rangers of Shadow Deep does) or more of collection of random generators (like Five Parsecs from Home)?

@frd
No set campaigns. If players don't have their own narrative setting - Supernatural, Constantine, Kolchak - there's a fictional city with specific locations and tables to kick things off. However, I figure most people already have a sense of where and when they want to run their games.

The narrative/RPG portion is designed to give players an opportunity to interact, to deal with NPCs and non-combat challenges, in their preferred setting - and then deal with the consequences. Those consequences translate to advantages/disadvantages in the tabletop war game. (which is what Nightmares really is)

Just heard about this yesterday through your e-mail newsletter, Patrick. I'm a fan of Exploit Zero (though I always default to calling it Hardwired still) so I'm looking forward to this.

For a while now I've been collecting figures for a Monster Hunter International inspired war game, which overlaps what I see in the previews for WNC, but with a lot (sometimes *a lot*) of firepower, does WNC allow for a special forces level of weaponry?

Thanks,
Chris
