With the Scots...
« on: January 21, 2024, 12:53:51 PM »
Major Shytes McCregor, OC commanding B Company 1st Bn. the Black Watch, and his lads have come a long way from the Western Desert. Into Normandy just after D-Day, actually. On this odyssey they'd learned many new skills, sniping, and close tank support, naming but two.
As for new enemies, meet these two vile creatures, not German Army, Nazis of the 12th.SS Panzers! Out for a morning of Bocage tank hunting...

But these two clowns have been spotted. Our old pal, now Sergeant Alf Tupper, closes in for the kill!

A two inch mortar team fire smoke to shield a fighting patrol, moving in support.

Nice to see Alf Tupper's worth recognised, as he is now a Sergeant. Looks like he's sprinting off to get his fish and chips? Nice work on the minis, too.

Thanks muchly yer Lordship, I tried to make the title same as the book I'm reading, 'With the Scots.'. But, apparently you can't type that, as the pc droid exterminates it!

See, see wot I mean, the actual book title rhymes with pox!!!???

Thank for the recommendation. I picked up a copy for £2.99 in my local Oxfam yesterday and will now move it closer to the top of my reading pile.

Anyone labouring under the delusion, that the fighting was easier after Normandy, will get their eyes opened with that book. It's harrowing and gut wrenchingly sad.

B Company 1st Bn. the Black Watch will be going into action very soon, politically correct AAR to follow!

Great book, and great looking figures. The 'tammie' & Tommy combo looks very cool. Weird that you can't use the 'J' word...

Weird indeed, though it may be worth noting that the word has a very different meaning to Americans, which could easily lead to misunderstandings.

Nice work.
As an experiment, I did try to post the J word and yes it does get changed. It is usually used as a pejorative outside of the military context though.

We tend not to like it. Unless, you know, its somebodys actual name.
Generally seen as pejorative

I love the term, always have, back in the day we usually prefixed it with poxy, or a straight 'Peej'. But if you really wanted to wind up a Scotch Squaddie try, 'Broken Square', to a Black Watch type beastie. He was certain to reply with the Glasgea' Kiss!
Meanwhile back at the war, this book is in the same league as the one already mentioned...
Battalion: British Infantry Unit's Actions from El Alamein to the Elbe, 1942-45 by Alastair Borthwick.
