Perry ACW for US Cavalry Plains Wars??
« on: November 17, 2009, 05:40:46 AM »
I am wondering whether or not the Perry's plastic figures could be used for US Cavalry for Plains Wars...both mounted and unmounted (infantry)?? I have not seen the internal components in either boxed set, so I was hoping someone on this forum could help me. Thank you very much in advance. I am nearing the absolute and total completion of my very first gaming project, and figured, what the heck, let's prolong this beast a bit more with some US Cavalry figures.... o_o

The cavalry figures are usable in my opinion, the right paintjob combined with the kepi's and the officers slouch looks fine and I've used them as later US cavalry with no one commenting.

The infantry not so much, the rifles are too old and not carbines and the clothing is much less uniform.
So many projects..... so little time.......

You could certainly use the ACW cavalry for the earlier Wars of the 1860's such as the Red Cloud War - Fetterman massacre, wagon box fight etc.
But the uniforms/weapons are too early for the Little Big Horn or Hollywood style cavalry.
Its all a matter of personal taste, if you just want dark blue jackets, sky blue trousers etc then they will work fine.

I'm in total agreement, fine for 1863(ish) to 1870, thereafter......

Thanks folks...I would like to get some figures to use for dismounted cavalry as well. Cheap price, but decent figures. I will have to find someone with a boxed set of Cavalry and take a good look at them.

I'm sure that Perry do dismounted cavalry to match these but only in metal... Perry figs are always worth a look and aren't too pricey when you consider the sculpt quality.

As for the suitability of the figures, I agree with everything that's been said above - ideal for the early plains wars (1862 - 1870 ish) so, Red Cloud's War, various campaigns against the Cheyenne (e.g. the war involving Roman Nose and Beecher Island), Custer on the Washita, the wars against the Kiowa in 1868-70 (I think), etc....
