Re: Three Musketeers using Fistful of Lead: Bigger Battles?
« Reply #15 on: 18 July 2024, 04:11:47 AM »

The King's Musketeers and Friends.  The King is over to the right along with Planchet.  The legendary Musketeers are above them along with my 'fifth' musketeer who I shall name as Alexander (not Albert) de Treville in my version - in honor of the author.  On the left are five sets of five mounted with five matching dismounts (or as close as possible, the front two sets are created, the back three sets are from the Bluemoon sets).  The legendary musketeers, the king, and Planchet also have matching mounts/dismounts.

The Cardinal's Guard and Fiends (sic).  Bottom right are Highwaymen.  The Cardinal is just above them.  Again, on the left, mounts and dismounts, five 'significant' cardinals guards with mounts and dismounts are above the Cardinal, the cardinal and Rochefort also have mount/dismount sets.  Three of the highwaymen also have mounted and dismounted versions.

The Civilians and other (mostly) Peacable Folk.  There are two versions of the carriage.  The back three rows on either side are female figures.  The queen, M'Lady, etc. are at the lower left - along with two versions of the executioner and female victim; with two females to each coach that yields forty-five women and girls in the mix.

Note that there are plenty of casualty figures.  And all the figures are now primed and ensconced in matching blue boxes (the King's colors, of course) with magnetic sheets to keep things from sliding around.  Also note that except for the King and the Cardinal, all of the armed groups are in 'units' of five figures while all of the unarmed (mostly) figures are in 'units' of six figures - except the queen and M'Lady.  This does not include the late added carters, seventeen of them in three different sculpts; more than I need so not quite sure how I will use them.

Now all I have to do is paint it all (well, less one figure painted for me).  Should be lots of fun to build up more and more painted figures until I can have 'mass' games with many players.  And must make sure I take careful notes when painting the figures, especially the uniformed ones, to ensure matching colors.   Though I am thinking to differentiate the various musketeer/caridnal's guard groupings by all five having the same hair color and all five horses being the same basic color, can also if needed vary the hat colors a bit - certainly the combination of hair color and hat color will allow enough variations for all the groups as well as the blue for the King's Guard and the Red for the Cardinal's Guard.

There is some possibility I will be adding a few buildings from 3D pre-prints but mostly will use my pirate buildings and a church or two which are almost all already painted.  Also have wagons and carts, all with solid wheels but what the heck, I can borrow from my now fully primed Robin Hood collection plus another cart and wagon to assemble and prime with spoked wheels.

No photos - yet - but I've bought in a bunch of 3D medieval buildings to add to my pirate buildings and including a quite impressive church, not quite Notre Dame but with a big yard to fight in.  Maybe not a real close match to 17th century France but I think they will still set a nice tone for the games, assembly and painting still required.

I remember that the real sets that were taken for the swashbuckling films in France, like the 3 Musketeers, Le Captan and others was the town of Montpazier in Dordogne. Here are some pictures to give you an idea.  ;)

Thanks, Calvin.  That is very helpful.  My buildings might not match too closely stylistically but the photos can help with painting.

A lot of the buildings I have are from here: https://www.dungeonartifacts.com/search?page=1&q=briarwood

Might not be correct for France but it, more or less, fits the era.  Many of the other buildings I have, mostly painted, are similar to the Briarwood in style, though not 3D prints, had since before that phenomena was in full swing.  Certainly has added lots of options - and cost me a few bucks along the way!

I think your buildings will be fine for the period, following the address you have given. If the photos I have sent can be of use to you, well that will be very good.  ;)

I think I found my "Notre Dame" in 15 mm, not a precise model - and not cheap - but close enough:

From here: https://www.ebay.com/itm/326385037772?chn=ps&mkevt=1&mkcid=28&google_free_listing_action=view_item&srsltid=AfmBOop_Jwdi7lfFz3HuRpjfUt_UrQQLleful4PXEe-fcm-mqAtDb2v8DbA&com_cvv=8fb3d522dc163aeadb66e08cd7450cbbdddc64c6cf2e8891f6d48747c6d56d2c

Also found this:

and this:

Still hunting but now finding a number of specific French buildings that I can add to my collection.  Just need to wait for the budget to recover from the holiday season - that budget is a bit battered and bruised just now.

There is also this much more affordable church based on St. Mere English:

But I like the Cathedral.  Just need to 'justify' in my mind the expense for something that is just there to 'set the tone'.  And be sure I have space to store even more buildings!  I have a plan.

The latter three items are from here: https://www.warfayre.co.uk/shop?store-page=Buildings-Terrain-WW2-c142235410

Your find is superb, the cathedral is good but you still have to use it because the prices are also high.
Otherwise, the farm or the farmhouse are good for making a relay where the Cardinal's guards can wait to prevent the musketeers from arriving in Paris to give the ferrets to the Queen.  ;)

Hmm, maybe I can call it the Vieux Pere Cathedral.   lol

I was thinking of one or the other farms for a game inspired by (not a duplicate of) The Man in the Iron Mask.  I wonder if there is a 15 (or 18) mm version of the character in the mask?  Not really necessary since the mask is removed early but it might be fun to have such a figure.

Now I need to find a version of the Bastille!

Those hobby connective dots can start adding up the expended coinage.  :o

Tried to order the farms above only to discover Warfare only ships within UK.  Thanks anyway.  Moving on to other options.

But did order the cathedral and some other items.  Now to find a few more French items perhaps.

While awaiting the last of the buildings, including the cathedral which are all on their way to me, I've developed a bit of a back story to provide a fictional setting to host my musketeer games - here is what I posted at my blog earlier today, with apologies if needed to the French amongst us  ;):

Introducing Ville Fanfaronnade located in the region of La Campagne Puant.

The local man of the hour is Baron Gaston Cocue and his younger and very comely wife, la Baronne Colette Coquina.

The baron is served by René Zarbi, the baroness by Cècile Grivoise.

And just now the somewhat too frequent visitor, Armand-Louise de Boulot, Count of Hauteur, special agent to the King, is plying the baroness with his intimate advances.

The baron has been turning a ‘blind’ eye for some time since the pair’s dalliance allows him private time with the extraordinarily curvaceous Cècile.

Meanwhile, René, who is publicly known to be quite devout and a frequent visitor to the Cathedral Vieux Père in the center of the town, is actually indulging himself with his fondness for the baron’s stables, nothing particularly untoward, just a deep love for the horses who seem to warm to him - which is completely opposite to how women respond to him in general; sometimes he spends time with the malady afflicted stone mason who maintains the stonework of the cathedral, Henri Blaise, his only human friend who secured him his position with the baron.

Not so warm to René is the cathedral’s Rector Bento who is just now preparing to entertain the Parisian cardinal’s agent, Abbé Gilles Meslier, who is accompanied by a young lady he hopes to convince to join an order of nun’s, one Odile of Roquemadour, not particularly comely but possessed of a unique set of charms.  René, upon his first sighting of Odile, is stricken like a lost puppy - though he has no real hopes, just a deeply hidden desire.

Into this setting shall ride our heroic Musketeers on a mission to protect the count.

And by a different road shall arrive select members of the Cardinal’s guard to protect the abbé.

And on a third road and by coach shall arrive a secretive agent of those who pay well, Lady Esmeralda Printemps to meet with Graham Illcrummy, Duke of Summerrise, who she is fond of as much for who he is as how much he pays her when needed and in whom she places her deepest secret desires for her future.

Alas, the story will await painting of figures and assembly and painting of buildings before it can advance much further.

Received the 'massive' cathedral today along with a couple of other buildings.  Just a couple of photos for figure size reference - obviously not painted yet.  The figures are Peter Pig AWI and base not textured yet.  Pretty elegant design of the cathedral, minimal number of parts, the other two are all one piece.  And, I suspect, that gives me all the buildings I will need.  Until something else catches my fancy - and the budget clears!

Last image is with figures at front door of cathedral.

nice, from a footprint point of view I'd say it's probably undersized, but perfect on the table...

Did some layout of the rest of my unpainted 3D buildings suitable for this era.  Not shown are a bunch of buildings I can mix in - all painted - from my pirate buildings.  Here is the photo:

Might be better to have more of a town square set-up.  What do you think?  Those buildings on the left shall be along the Riviere Colander.  And those on the right will be rural and agricultural.

Have quite a few - including some newly acquired - items to create an active street with lots of vendor trade stands.  And plenty of scatter terrain to make it truly busy.

One needs places for musketeers to show off their acrobatic skills!  Or to hide behind!  Jealous husbands can be dangerous.   :o :D
