I have wondered if something like that would work for terrain panels. They are often a similar size to art work and could hang like a painting when not in use.

Several years ago I reorganised my wargames room with plastic racking from ALDI.  Of course later they had metal and wooden racking that would have been better. 
My trees and small terrain items are in clear plastic tubs that came from Poundland and fit (stacked) between the plastic shelves. 
Many of my figures are in Bisley metal 10 drawer office cabinets and large figures and vehicles in a 6 drawer version all bought cheaply when a local office closed. 
Other stuff is stored in drawers under my custom made wargames table.

I got a bunch of these at Office Depot. It works especially well with a magnetized system. Magnetic bases with magnetic sheets in the drawers. I store the drawers under the overhang of my game table.

I took a stock take of how I store figures a while back and the totals were:


    White boxes x 41
    This includes figures stored in boxes with magnetic/steel sheet combo and individual fantasy figures stored in KR foam trays in the boxes.

    Really Useful boxes x 3
    I have never found them that useful for storing painted figures but did pick up some MDF inserts which work well with the 25mm minifigs marlburians and a 4l box

    Kaiser Rushforth Cases x 8
    These hold skirmish forces, spaceships, ogres, etc

    Small bisley drawers x 29
    mostly 20mm, ships and smaller 25s such as the FPW infantry

    Larger Bisley Cabinets  x 14
    Cavalry, figures with spears, 40mm AWI, etc

    I also have 14 shelves of two display cabinets ocupied by 54mm Toy Soldier armies, 54mm Punic Wars and my 54 Napoleonics collection (10 shelves and a ton of figures still to sort and repaint/refurbish)

    Add to that the scenery which occupies:

    12 x 50L boxes
    9 x plastic drawers
    15 whites boxes and RUBs

    This doesn't include the boxes of unpainted figures which are in the loft or in the 2 under desk 8 drawer cabinets....

    I have started to rationalise the LOTR figure storage (I was storing them on movement trays but decided that took up too much space)

It is about 6-7,000 painted figures.  I would really like to use one storage solution but collecting everything from 20mm to 54mm makes that a problem.

In an ideal world I would have a permanent wargames table with a load of bisley cabinets with different drawers sizes under it for storing most of the troops and more display cabinets for all the 54mm collections.

Most of my figures are on trays on shelves. The rest are in drawers underneath, sets of plastic drawers, plus a wooden cabinet full of WW2 vehicles.
Not sure how many I have, but probably around 10,000 painted figures.

I store all my 28mm in plastic boxes - foot units go into A4 storage boxes



These are clear - keep the dust out and the best part they are dirt cheap

Cavalry, Pikes etc go into larger deeper boxes

I got back into wargaming in 1995 so 30 years ago (ish) - I have sold a number of painted collections off over the years - probably another 1500 figures...

And as Steve Burt has just commented, you can see that  6-7,000 is small compared to some people!

THat's a really nice and practical storage solution.  There is always a problem with display cabinets about how you get the figures off the shelves and into boxes for the club or onto the table.
