One-Eyed Alien Girl - Again looking for merciless critique
« on: November 18, 2009, 01:45:16 PM »
Figure's by Reaper Miniatures.  I'm again looking for fairly merciless critique.  I do already see her hand needs more definition, and I'm not sure what to do with the reds (or rather, how to do it).

You, sir, are not allowed to attempt a takeover of the solar system until your octopus sobers up.

Merciless? Looks good to me. I think there is a chip on the elbow or something. You did a really good job with the black on the vest, the flesh is great.

I agree, she looks good. I'm glad to see a painted version of this figure as I've been having a hard time making out the details on the unpainted once shown on the Reaper website.

The one thing that occurs to me is that perhaps you want to add a spot color somewhere on the lower half of the model. Right now her headband, wristbands and the trim around her shirt are all working together, but you've got nothing below the waist to draw the eye and tie it all together. I would suggest a golden trim around the cuffs of her trousers.

If you want me to be truly merciless, I would also revisit the mold lines on the upper part of her oversized raygun ::)

Anyway:

i) Double mould line on her face and awful mould slip on her gun! Not your fault but shame on Reaper :o
ii) Elbow as already pointed out.
iii) Skin: looks a little drybrushed and uneven. I'd go for solid blends rather than dry-brushing, (it's a falacy that it's a quick way to paint, great for wood grain, bases etc.. no skin).
iv) Reds: Well I always paint reds a bit too dark and build up, it suits the minis though, (have a habit of painting plate armoured chaos dwarves red ;)). Just avoid going too pink on your hi-lights and do subject subject analysis, look at how red clothes take highlight and shade:

Hope this helps, (took me ages to get red right!).

The Commander

Just a quick note - what looks like drybrushing on the skin is really my paint going chalky due to overthinning as I took the skin to white.  I thought I'd fixed that.

Nice painting, I do like the miniature.  Maybe use a dark red wash, they slow lighten up the read and add creases yourself to the pants.  I usually do this on minis that have no definition in these areas.

Try using dark flesh to shade the red (on the pants, the top looks fine) as it will give a nice contrast without becoming too dark.

That's what I'd do anyway, but other than that, the mini is great, really well done.  :)

I think she looks awesome as is.

Must be carrying that BFG* to make up for a lack of depth perception.

"...Must be carrying that BFG* to make up for a lack of depth perception..."

Since there is a pistol in her holster I think of the larger weapon (the single one not the double-barrel ones) as a kind of Plasma Shotgun.  The ultimate Zombie Buster weapon.

Gracias,

Glenn

A Plasma Shotgun, you say...
This has implications for my next Fantastic Worlds game.
