BSC2024 McMordain's medieval/fantasy winery
« on: February 29, 2024, 09:32:34 AM »
Ahoy!

I will plan to build a winery for medieval/low fantasy setting. First I will try to make a row of grapevines. If the results are to my liking and they don't take a lot of time to make, I will proceed with the actual structure of the building.
If the plants turn out to be a hassle to make I will probably alter course and build a wind mill.
I'm free this weekend so expect some pic of trying to glue together some very-very small balls for clusters of grapes  lol

I tried to do grape vines before and the only thing that worked out was the grapes.  I used Woodland Scenics oranges.  Dipped a bit of wire in glue then rolled it around in the oranges and let it set.  Might work for you.

Should be a good year, regardless.

Curious to see what you'll make of the building :)

Well I did something similar, just with small bearing balls.

I got these ages ago (maybe even before 2000) from my late uncle, but never could find a use for them.

I glued a small plastic bead to a piece of wire and built up the cluster one at a time using superglue.

After this I primed them and applied two coats of polyurethane varnish to really bond them together.

The copies turned out to be ok. Not as good as the originals, but they will work.

For the plants I used some leftover GW Dryad bits. They are pinned to the base.

Tomorrow I will texture the base an add the rest of the fruit.
I will glue on the leaves too (I have some laser cut leaves and a puncher from AK), then prime the whole thing. I'm not sure how this will work out. I may have to add the leaves after painting.
I plan to make six of these bases, probably three with fruit and three without, but I may add fruit to all of them.

Should be a good year, regardless.

Curious to see what you'll make of the building :)

Well about that I have no idea yet. I need to do some research first.
It should be small though, no 40x40 cm footprint this time  lol I have less free time this year.

Very nice results.

Wow; this is already looking great!

For a moment I was afraid you were going to build up each and every individual bunch of grapes. I was somewhat relieved to see you then cast them...  :D

In medieval times grapes most likely were grown around wooden pillars/sticks as opposed to modern rows along wire frames.
Far less active than I used to...

They apparently grew quite a big taller than we like them to today. Also, they seem to have used fruit bearing trees for them to climb.

This is just a very quick internet search, so authenticity is not verified, but the above do look somewhat consistent in their depictions.

Then again; if the project is a fantasy one, the above can just as easily be ignored :D

Gluing many tiny things to other things! I'm down - definitely going to have to try that next. I have some commercially produced roughly scale grape plants that are a single object - leaves, stem and grapes all molded together and painted.

Well I would do that if I only needed a couple of them. Or had more time  ;)

In medieval times grapes most likely were grown around wooden pillars/sticks as opposed to modern rows along wire frames.

Yeah, I did some research and found some of the pictures Daeothar put up. I really like the one with the fruit trees. Interesting idea.
I added poles made of toothpicks, next to the plants. I like how they look, but the dryad bits don't lend themself very well to represent a climber plant...

I also added leaves to one of the plants.

This made me realize two things.
One, I'm pretty sure I need to add the leaves after painting.
Two, it's not really feasible to make multiple bases this way. Gluing the leaves individually onto 6 plants on 6 bases is just too much work, for a gaming terrain piece anyway. And for a proper vineyard I would need more than that anyway.
I will do this one base this way, but I need to come up with something different for the rest.

I found this picture of a free standing grapevine. I really like the look, but I don't know how to reproduce it in an easy and quick way, that also produces something that looks good.

What to do... o_o

Hah, that's cheating. Where can I get those? :D

I honestly have no clue, I bought them at a thrift store more than a decade ago
