Or may I make a further heretical suggestion that I have used for a bit and still do sometimes.

Add each pip of armour save to the models toughness, eg a T3 model with a 5+ armour save becomes T3(5) roll for wounding Vs T5, save mods reduce this Toughness number in the usual way or dice roll as you prefer.

Or for T10 or higher roll as per armour values in 40K 3rd edition etc. D6+S= wounding rolls only (ignore glancing).

Give it a go but YMMV  ;)

I think there are innumberable ways to streamline or make Warhammer's basic ancient combat system better...however, as we see from all the other responses - in the games, particularly Mordheim, there are a TON of special rules/abilities/traits/skills/spells, etc...which are tied to the way the system is written.

If it's Warhammer you would be on the other side of a 4ft table so could be problematic!

Fair point! I think I've never actually played Warhammer on anything broader than a dining-room table (although I recall a game of The Dolgan Raiders on a friend's bedroom floor). But we often share KoW dice across a 4' table (plonking a dice tray down for the rolls and then sliding it across).

Very clever! That does sound a better way of streamlining things.

True - I certainly hadn't thought the Mordheim case through!

On a tangent, there's a great blog post by the Donnybrook author that sets out how to plug first-edition 40K weapons into that game. I thought that was a great way to keep some of Warhammer's main USP (lots of variation in stats and effects) and use it with more modern mechanics.
