6x4 is ideal for many games. If you need extra size, you can add more 6x2 sections to make 6x6 or 8x6 and larger.
6' wide is definitely the limit; 5' width is not so good if you use modular terrain.

I have 6 tables each of which is 6ft x 2.5ft. The tops are all old doors and the frames are mounted on casters so they can be moved around.

This means I can have the best of both worlds -either 6ft wide and 15ft long or 5ft wide and 18ft long. I even have inserts that allow the first option to be configured 5ft x 18ft.

The tables themselves are kitchen counter height (we prefer standing when playing) and if folks are struggling to reach centre of a 6ft table then I have a couple of low foot stools to stand on.

Picture of when they were being built

18 x 6ft configuration - inserts to extend 5ft width to 6ft in centre of tables

Seeing those pictures makes me wonder also: when putting storage room underneath the table, what kind of tabletop overhang do you feel is minimally required? If standing, not much at all, but if sitting (on barstools for instance)?

Decision made!! so many thanks to you all for your input but to you Eric an even bigger thank you. The idea of 6'x2.5,' and multiples thereof is truly inspirational and covers all eventualities and when not required will line the side and back walls as shelving.
Many thanks again one and all

I use (3) 2'x4' folding leg tables I got from one of the big box hardware stores.  This give me a 4'x6' area for WW1 aerial wargaming.  I was using 4'x6' for WW2 ground warfare as well but lately I cut it down to using (2) 2'x4' tables, giving me a 4'x4' area.

The reason I cut it down was I play mainly skirmish games and realized the first several moves were mainly moving one side or the other into position before any combat took place.  Since then I place a 3'x3' mat on top of the table to cut down on maneuvering and get right into the shooting.  This also give me some room on the table to put my dice, cards, rules, etc.  Here's an example of a game using One-Hour Skirmish Wargames Rules in a 3'x3' arear:

The crow flies at midnight
