The shield details are fabulous! :-*
Em dezembro de '81
Botou os ingleses na roda
3 a 0 no Liverpool
Ficou marcado na história
E no Rio não tem outro igual
Só o Flamengo é campeão mundial
E agora seu povo
Pede o mundo de novo

thanks Carlos..much obliged..
in reality the troopers should
have carried a triple bull hide
plain shield..but some ignored
the order...and painted on their
own interpretation of the Spanish
royal arms...its a fascinating subject
the shields..stems from the shilds
carried by the Moors in Spain.. ;)

Further to the above details
.....the Trooper is brandishing
what may well be a cut down
cavalry sabre ,as the soldiers
were not enamoured with the cavalry
sabres as they proved unwieldy in combat.
examples have been dug up which prove the point

found a very interesting example
of a Spanish Colonial short sword
or to give it is proper name..ESPADA ANCHA
a rather decent example to boot...cicra
1700-1800..but used beyond then ..the
workmanship in Spain where most of these
were made was for the most part of the
highest quality, and much favoured by the
Cuera Troopers

latest picture of a Cuera Trooper about to fire his Escopeta carbine............ :o :-* :o :-*
a note to say The escopeta was a light, inexpensive musket or shotgun popularized in the mid-seventeenth century by Spanish cavalry on the colonial frontier. It had a .69 caliber and a 38½" barrel. Although it lacked accuracy, it was still considered acceptable for use against Indigenous peoples in Mexico, Louisiana, Florida, and Texas. Mounted troops often carried it across the saddle bow in a soft leather sheath called a funda or ord. The escopeta's recoil made it challenging to aim, contributing to its reputation as a noisy but imprecise weapon. Despite being replaced by other arms, it remained popular with mounted troops on the northern frontier1. Francisco Targarona, a royal gun maker in Madrid, produced escopetas that served as models for other Spanish gunsmiths. These weapons played a role in settling Alta California beginning in 17692. Overall, the escopeta was a sturdy and dependable firearm used for nearly 200 years on the northern frontier

Ged,

I know this is somewhat off target for your current range but since you seem to be joining a few Mexican dots together have you given any thought to doing Yaqui Indians? Equally renowned as fierce warriors and would cover the same time span as this range and a bit beyond, indeed both Mexican and US forces battled Yaqui Indians after the First World War and in the case of Mexico into the late 1920s.

With some variety to dress and armament, they could be used with your Conquistador and Mexican ranges and even US Cavalry for the Pershing Intervention.

Just a thought.
