The new releases look great.
Does anyone have any thoughts on the "make up" of an Apache warband?
I'm guessing everyone would have bows and arrows, quite a few spears,but only a few muskets?
Also,how many cavalry?

Hi Andy
good question......bear in mind the weapons
used in the early period were to some extent
still in play in the late 1800s!. like my
warriors the slingshot..and wide assortment
of clubs..knives..and trade muskets even
then were in wide use. Bands of 20-50 were
the average. As for mounted warriors..a lot
less as the horse was really only used for
getting from A to B....and as food

..Apaches
would strip the dead of all useful items..espacially
waist up for shirts and bangles...never gold only
silver ,and scalping was not a practise they
indulged in.

Based on what I've read online I'm getting the idea that the Spanish operated in quite small units, usually less than 20.
So,with a slightly larger Apache band,I'm thinking Fistful of Lead core rules might be the way to go.
I'm planning on setting my games firmly in the late 1760's to the 1790's,so possibly not too many muskets.
I've read that spears were very popular weapons,being cheap,easy to make and use,and probably very effective against Spanish cavalry.

This is a great line of figures. I vacationed in Santa Fe some years back, and read up on the Pueblo revolt, the perpetual raiding between Navajo and Spanish, and
how the Puebloans eventually allied with the Spanish in opposition to the Apache and Comanche.

So, now I'm going to get greedy. How about some Navajo and Pueblo Indians too?

Hi Andy
just a note on the Apache spears. they were orginally
heated at the tip and hardened by fire...replaced
by almost any metal they could lay there hands on
in much the same way as arrows only larger...eventually
to counter the Spanish light cavalry and Cuera they were
made larger..ir longer. for wood Mulberry was a favourite
and cedar i believe.

Thank you very much for the info.
I'm currently reading "A Bad Peace and a Good War,the Mescalero Apache Uprising 1795-99".
I've only just started it,and have already read about 2 actions where things turned out pretty badly for the Spanish!!
One thing I have noticed is that the author comments on the amount of firepower the Apaches had,both arrows and muskets.
Clearly the Apaches had access to plenty of muskets and ammunition even as early as the late 18th Century.
So,I'm thinking that my Apache warband will contain more musket armed warriors than I had originally planned.

its a very good book...will list a few more
for you when im able. your quite right the
Apaches had access to quite a few muskets
as early as the beginning of the 18th Century
and as their resistance grew into the 19th
Century they became the best armed Indian
tribe..plains indians et all...although later they
were not fond of shotguns!

Another one of my Gringo40s Early Apaches
this time firing a Trade Musket...the main problem
for the Apached ,although they became proficient
at using these weapons ammunition or rather lack
of it was a constant problem..resolved by sometimes
just raiding for this precious commodity..more often
trading against furs.

another newly painted Cuera from the hand of Andy Singleton...

28mm Gringo40s Spanish mounted Cuera trooper sporting a mid blue coat, normal colour mid blue and cheaper cloth,Supplies to the presdidio forts were uncertain so a lot of variation exsisted until the regulations of 1772 in New Spain..ie Apacheria figure from Gringo40s latest release in the New Apache and Comanche Wars 1700-1900 range. availabe now from www.gringo40s.com
