Thanks folks - I'll check out all the ones I don't have. I'm looking for a good feel of the period in the rules, rather than just tossing dice.

You will be tossing dice anyway. ;) The rules are just there to solve situations that can arise in the story you want to build. :)

Like others said my vote goes to Ravenfeast. Simple rules with warbands of 20 or 30 figures and can also be used for other periods/themes with some small adjustments.
Just give them a try and see how it works for you.
You have a facebook page that helps with rules for other factions like Irish, Normans, Saracens, etc.

I second the vote for Pig Wars.  Also see if you can find an old set of rules from minifigs called "A knight to dismember."  It was Norman vs Saracen vs Viking raiding parties.

Folks,

Anyone have recommendations for a good set of Viking era rules? I am familiar with Saga, Lion Rampant etc, but I am looking for something suitable more for raids, skirmishes and able to handle the early viking period.

Any thoughts and strengths/weaknesses of the rules, greatl appreciated!

JP

I was always interested in Age of Blood by Tom Hinshelwood, which is an older set of rules for Viking raiding .  Its a "warband", single based model, d10 resolution (if memory serves), which also includes rules for sailing between areas as part of its campaign elements.  I've read it a fair few times, but have not played it.

From the Intro:
"Age of Blood is a skirmish level battle game set during the Dark Ages where players take control of bands of Vikings and lead them on adventures and bloody raids in search of loot and glory.  Incorporated into the game is a campaign system whereby the abilities and wealth of a raiding party can rise and fall depending on the successes and failures on the battlefield.

The game is designed for use with 25mm or 28mm miniatures, with each model representing an individual Viking warrior.  A raiding party will begin with between 20 and 30 members (enough to crew a small ship), but over the course of a campaign the number will rise, possibly up to 60 or more)."

I have played most of the games mentioned and keep falling back on a older game called Strandhogg.  It works very well for raid type games.  I have also used it with some of the rules from Pig Wars to figure out what you capture from your raids is worth. Combine the combat rules from Strandhogg with the raid results from Pig Wars and you should have what you are looking for.  The combination also makes campaigning allot of fun and easy to do.
