Pirate Ship, Argh Jim Lad, Shiver Me Timbers And All That
« on: November 22, 2009, 12:01:13 AM »
This model is no good for the "build something contest" as it is not scratch built, but I have enjoyed the project anyway.

I have had the Playmobil ship sitting around for ages and recently got my butt in gear to get it built as a second pirate ship. We have a big pirate game coming up over Xmas and a deadline is always good to get one going.

The starting point, picked it up cheap off eBay.

Had to build up some fake decking to cover up some dodgy mouldings.

Used cardboard to block off the windows.

After much hacking, it started to take shape. The biggest part was to waterline the hull. This involved making an little gizmo that allowed me to draw a felt tip line around the hull at a constant height so I could use a jigsaw to cut it off without losing too many fingers.

The cannon were pens, holes drilled, the pen bits jammed in. Then used match sticks to make a frame and added a hatch from plastic card.

The Crow's Nest was fun to make. I wanted it quite large so it could hold a number of sharpshooters.

Added some shields to the hull and then used greenstuff to hide the sawn off hull edges.

More matches used on the windows.

Excellent, I had one of those oh... 25 years ago? Played with it many times. It's nice to see someone getting additional use out of it for miniatures. Now, I wonder if I still have mine stuck away in a trunk somewhere!

Nicely done Michi - I've got that one myself.

Did you fit a completely new tower section?

Painting in progress.

I used a Halfords car primer for the undercoat. This works pretty good as a wooden basecoat.

The deack and upper hull was then inked with loads of water to help it run everywhere...

Looking good!

I always find glass a PITA to paint, especially at this sort of scale. I would perhaps look for some articles. Otherwise, it's all taking shape very nicely.  ;)

Saw one of these at the local dump, wish I picked it up. At least for use in Strange Grogge.

I think my girlfriend woulda killed me if she saw me hacking it up though...  :(

Nice, I´ll get my gang ready for boarding (would be a pity to leave it at yours), then I´ll buy me a really big hat and call myself "Commodore"!
