I would say growing rather than dying.
We (Sally 4th) sell all the booklets, and I would say that demand for them has been steadily growing over last 18 months.
Based on what people are ordering, I would say 2-3 new players each week.

And of course the great thing about VBCW is that it’s so freestyle that you can play without any of the booklets, using whatever rules you like, whatever armies you fancy, whatever setting you like, your own backstory and your own choice of figure range and scale.

It’s a truly liberating setting…. :D

I wouldn't worry either way. Most wargaming genres wax and wane in terms of popularity, the butterly/shiny-shiny muse is strong. I've seen Cold War and Vietnam games come and go and then return in popularity and there's so much diversity avaiable in terms of figure ranges and possible conflicts these days that there will always be competition for attention.

That said, I suspect the real world and Britain's recent trajectory towards disintegration probably hasn't helped. I mean who needs Bertie Wooster & Co when you have a cabinet stuffed with Wodehousian figures or a Roderick Spode, when there's an actual, frog-faced git called Nigel offering pretty much the same agenda on the hustings?  ;)

In the spirit of no politics, I’ve deleted my original remarks. They would only have served to encourage him. :D

I'm running a 6-player VBCW game at HMGS Historicon in July and it sold out shortly after registration opened. I hope that's a good sign. I'm using the "official" books as inspiration, but I'm using the Combat Patrol rules for the actual game.

What level are those rules set at? Platoon size?

Yes, I run Platoon level at the 4-6 player size game, but usually I only give each players a squad/section and a vehicle/support weapon each.

Have you used them for VBCW before? I'm looking to try some alternatives to Went the Day Well.

I have a few times and it works very well. Full disclosure, I’ve written a few of their free supplements (Falklands and Star Wars), but players seem to pick it up easily and the double random activation mechanics keeps things unpredictable, which I like. Most vehicle stats are available as free downloads. Small arms stats can be as generic or specific as you like.

Doug,

Don't deny the world your wit and wisdom on my account. As I'm sure you'll agree, there are few more amusing sights than that of a dog chasing a motorbike.  :)

Apart from a toothless old dog gnawing at dry old bone….
