That's some nice stuff Jules.  Interesting idea with using the PVA.  Should help with rigidity too.

I use Liquitex Natural Sand Texture Gel.   It's more expensive than spackle, but I like working with it, and I like the texture and appearance--- easy to drybrush.   

It also seems to stick to anything.  I've used it over plastic, wood, pink insulation foam, and foam core.
